Beneath a Steel Sky – Remastered

Great game, great story, and one of the best interfaces I've seen on my iTouch

I paid for the iPod version without knowing that the game was free, but after playing the free version, I’m glad I got this. The sound is so much better. The music sounds incredible, not just a bunch of bleeps and bloops. The interface is one of the best for the iOS. Just touch a hotspot, and touch the action. It works seamlessly.

4.5 stars are awarded, however, for an incredibly short length. Something about it made it feel like it had just started when it had ended, but the new end scene suggests a sequel. I can’t wait. I recommend this to any adventure gamer.

Might be my favorite in the series, despite the crates

Some people may hate the switch from 2D to 3D, but you have to think realistically. At this point, adventure games were on life support. Do you really think they would try to sell a 2D cartoony point and click game to an audience with no patience for that type of thing. I’m just grateful this game got made. Controlling with my keyboard was not as easy as controlling with my mouse, but the puzzles and the story made me forget all about it. I don’t know why people complain about the graphics. They’re beautiful! If anything, it looks just as much like a cartoon as the first two, but this time, they took their cues from Pixar instead of Disney.

The block puzzles did seem like a cop out to replace inventory puzzles, but I didn’t hate them, and sometimes they were kind of fun.

The ending is slightly less abrupt than the one in BSII, but I guess I’ll have to play the next game in order for the story to continue. It was less than fitting, but more than unsatisfying.

The story is amazing. It feels like a movie, only way better than most movies.

If you loved the first two and aren’t against controlling a game with something other than a mouse, you’ll love this game.

Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror

Underrated

No, it’s not as good as the first. But it’s still a great game. Some puzzles are not very well designed (why give me a silly item like panties that has one use at the first of the game, but doesn’t do anything other than amuse some people by showing it? I expected it to be like the hand zapper from the first. A lot of build up for a good payoff), but some of them are genius. The voice acting is great, the graphics are beautiful, and the adventure keeps your interest the entire time. I thought a lot of the dialogue was really funny, with more hits than misses.

As with many adventures, it ends abruptly, and basically gives you the equivalent of a “You won!” screen. But I enjoyed playing it, and I would recommend it to people who liked the first one.

I never played the original, but I have the feeling I should

This was an amazing game from start to finish, but I felt like something was missing. Probably because there is. I talked to a friend in college, and he told me all the things they cut out. Now, new content is good. I’m not denying that. But the portions of this game where you control George are much more interesting than Nico, and the higher quality animation and sound during the new segments clashes horribly with the old segments. Now, if Revolution wanted to ADD Nico’s segments without REPLACING any of George’s stuff, that would be great.

Now, the hotspots and hint systems kind of make this game a breeze (I used maybe one hint, for there was no pixel hunting). This may be seen as hand holding (which it is) or dumbing down the experience (which it does), but it’s kind of a good thing. It makes it easier to hook people in to the experience that have never played an adventure game before.

The rating is so high because the experience was still great without all George’s stuff. I would probably rate it lower if I had nostalgia for the original, but since I haven’t, I"m basing this review off of the incredible experience I had my first time through. I got it through Steam, but I will probably pick up the original from gog to see what I’ve missed.

A hilarious and beautiful adventure.

I love Monkey Island. I played the original at a friend’s house at a young age and thought it was really funny, but I didn’t really play it for myself until the Special Edition games came out. As there was no special edition, I bought an original copy of CMI off of amazon and loaded up ScummVM.

Right off the bat, the first thing you’ll notice are the graphics. Even though this game was made in 1997, it hasn’t aged a day, as the cartoony style really is timeless. The SCUMM interface has been simplified (apparently taken from Full Throttle, which I haven’t played yet), and it works perfectly. The humor is great, the puzzles are fiendishly clever, and it keeps you interest the entire time.
The sound is a mixed bag, but it’s mostly perfect. The music is amazing and never gets annoying, and the voice acting is great and wonderfully delivered. But what’s mixed? The dialogue repeats a little too much. I really got sick of “Hmmm…no” whenever something didn’t work. Also, when I was stuck and trying to use every inventory, the lines really got annoying. But these are only small gripes.

Almost everything in this game is perfect. I took off a half of a star because of the abrupt ending, repeating dialogue, and the fact that the best character EVAR!!! was not in the game enough, that being Murray. Murray was sweet. I would buy ten copies of Murray Island and give them to my friends. He’s that cool. Great game! Recommended to just about everyone.

A worthy sequel to the spellbinding original

This is less a sequel, but more a continuation of the story set up in the previous one. It resumes right after the fitting and touching cliffhanger from the original with a beautiful cutscene. After that, the game starts. While the rendered backdrops are more detailed than the previous game, the story leads our heroine into icy territories, severely cutting down the variety of exotic backgrounds found in the previous game. But the artists made snow look better than I’ve ever seen it in a video game.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but the story is well paced and and engrossing. The ending had me in tears; it was so beautiful. But then, I started crying for another reason: it ended. It seems to be common in adventure games to have an abrupt ending. Sure, it resolved the main story arc, but more happened in the game. It wasn’t only focused on one thing.
Hopefully a sequel comes out in my lifetime. I don’t even care if it’s point and click or not. I love games of all genres, and if it controls like Assassin’s Creed, that would be great. I just want it to get made. The world of Syberia is too beautiful to be restricted to two games.

Just about as good as the original, but the abrupt ending and a particularly abstract and needless complex puzzle near the end (dealing with a clock) knock of a half star. Great game!

My favorite adventure-A beautiful experience from start to finish

I love everything about this game. Kate Walker is a likeable, strong heroine that never has to use violence or cruel trickery to get what she wants. While a clever adventure game always involves tricking somebody, she apologizes and makes good terms with the person later. The prerendered backdrops make for beautiful scenery. The story is great, the interface is simple, but able to get the job done, and pretty much everything else in this game makes you feel loved by the developers. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a true work of art.
