Zork makes casual return in new online RPG

It’s not the new adventure game that longtime Zork fans may have been hoping for, but the popular series has at last returned in an all-new gaming experience, as Jolt Online has now launched a browser-based RPG called Legends of Zork.

Legends of Zork is designed to be a casual online gaming experience, where you take the role of an unemployed salesman, who has to explore and fight his way across the Great Underground Empire. The Empire has fallen and the land has been invaded by all kinds of evil creatures, which players will have to fight in order to gain Zorkmids, the currency with which you will be able to buy new inventory items and level up. Players will have a choice of different characters, and be able to choose which company their character used to work for, determining their skill set.

The game has a simple interface, combining text and 2D pictures to inform the player of what’s going on. There are no real puzzles in the game, although players can try their luck at the complex card game, “Double Fanucci”. Play is limited as you are given 30 “action points” per day, which you use up when you go into battle, or you can buy more (with real money) if you want to continue playing. Players who reach a high enough level will be able to battle the elusive “Grue”. All the locations are based upon those found in the original Zork games, and offer nostalgic value for fans of the now 30 year old series.

Old school adventurers need not apply, but for a quick daily fix of this new Zork experience, the game starts at the White House and anyone wishing to venture into the Dark Forest and beyond can register (for free) at the Legends of Zork website.
