JoWooD to acquire DreamCatcher

In a surprising announcement, JoWood Productions has revealed its plans to acquire Canadian publisher DreamCatcher Inc. According to the announcement, the deal will make DreamCatcher a wholly owned subsidiary of the Austrian-based publisher.

The acquisition creates obvious partnership benefits for both companies, as DreamCatcher's position in the North American marketplace provides JoWood with an established distribution network for its growing multi-platform games lineup, while JoWooD's extensive European network allows for a more effective marketing of DreamCatcher's titles. As the press release explains it, "JoWooD will now benefit from a much larger product portfolio and the ability to simultaneously release products world wide through JoWooD's and DreamCatcher's mature distribution networks."

Of particular interest to adventure gamers will be the future of The Adventure Company, DreamCatcher's adventure label. While no DreamCatcher representatives were available for immediate comment, today's news did reveal that "the company's management team and employees will continue to operate from their office based in Toronto, Canada," and TAC's Agatha Christie license was cited as one of the highlights of DreamCatcher's portfolio. However, JoWooD has previously demonstrated no real interest in the adventure genre in Europe since its inception over ten years ago, so perhaps only time will tell if DreamCatcher retains the autonomy or support required to remain the leading adventure game publisher in North America.
