1st person revolution?
One I’m looking forward to: FRACT.
On the topic of slideshow vs. free movement - I used to wonder why Myst clones stuck with slideshow movement when technology was easily capable of realtime 3D environments, and still continue to do it now.
Not anyone can do great graphics in realtime 3D ! It’s really hard ! It’s much easier to make nice views for a slideshow game, because you can use softwares like photoshop to make them look better ! So in realtime you have free movement, in slideshow you can reach photorealism with a lot of work. That’s what I try to do in my game, and from what I read here, most of you won’t like that No problem, I knew it was perillous to make a slideshow game in 2012 lol
In fact the problem slideshow vs. free movement really depends on who’s making the game. A studio has no excuse : it has to be in realtime nowadays ! But an amateur or a small indie may choose slideshow for reasons of production difficulties. That’s also a matter of skills in development.
Simon - I edited and made a new thread about the topic, could you perhaps post what you wrote there?
sure !
Some of us like to use ‘Myst clone’ and ‘first-person adventure’ interchangeably. I do it sometimes, no malice intended.
It’s confusing for those who don’t do that. My initial reaction to the first post (and seeing Asylum and Tex mentioned) was also “Myst clones. Wait, what?”, so I can definitely understand Fien and Agustín’s (and others’) reactions…
That negative connotation is now gone, and rightly so.
What? Since when is “Myst clone” not the worst insult you can give to a game???
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka

Seconded.

Tex yeah maybe, but Asylum. Still a Myst-clone. Why? Because the game design and mechanics still derive from it. How hard is it to see that so many mechanics came from Myst over ‘Shadowgate’?

Because solitary, node-based, first person adventures with unobtrusive interfaces didn’t exist before Myst.

They were there long before The 7th Guest. You could call The Pawn a solitary, node-based, first person adventure game. I played that on the Commodore 64 25 years ago .

Indeed, but since every modern first person adventure gets hopelessly compared to Myst, I bring up The 7th Guest which exhibits similar mechanics and even predates Myst by nearly an entire year.

Nice list, thanks!
To me, a Myst clone is a game that strives to be like Cyan’s original games. They’re easy to spot.
Like some have already pointed out, I am too wondering why so many speak about Myst-clones, even when games differ in many respects. It’s a bit like calling a red ball a Mars-clone, just because it shares some (even formal or technical) features.
Hat of for Matthieu Gouby btw, who managed to create a game like that (The Five Cores) all by himself.
That negative connotation is now gone, and rightly so.

How did a Myst-hater get to be mod of an adventure game forum?
(or was that the requirement for the position?)
