Okay - One more wild guess that is almost certainly wrong:

Bent Svensson from A New Beginning.

That’s not bad at all Iznogood; it nearly matches everything bar the tense of the wife’s existence. Bent’s wife had died so it would have been didn’t instead of doesn’t.
Plus, from what we gather about their relationship, trust wasn’t a problem just Bent’s commitment to his work. You can tell I’ve played the game can’t you? (Well, sort of. Got a game breaking bug in that I can’t save any more after the end of chapter 5 so that’s as far as I’ve achieved.)

So it’s another I’m afraid.

Let’s add a second verse which should make it pretty easy.

Pugnacious I am, and not really honest
My son is a problem and will cost dear
My wife doesn’t trust me and once left me
I’ll hold on for grim life to stay around here.

My landlords don’t like me but I pay no rent
I like to zoom around in a car
For a time I was truly suicidal
And Betty proved to be one too far

That reminds me of Sam and Max
When Jimmy the rat wanted to commit suicide.
I know his rat-wife left him (um… I think Maria or Mary, can’t remember right)
And Betty reminds me of Boxing Betty who kicked Jimmy’s rat-butt! 

I think this it it. Jimmy the rat!
