R16 Bracket 4 - The Big AG VS Tournament
M1: Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within - I couldn’t decide for a long time between the two and at the end that horrible anniversary edition was a deciding factor, it ruined my experience with the game and shifted the scales in sequel’s favor
M2: The Secret of Monkey Island - No contest for me here, first Monkey Island is quintessential game
Match 1 Oh man! But really I have to go for Gabriel Knight 1 as it blew my mind at the time in a way that nothing else did or has done since. It wasn’t the first adventure game I played by any means, but this was the one that propelled Adventure Games to the top of my list of favourite genres by delivering a brilliantly told story with an adult theme in a way that nothing before had managed. GK2 is brilliant, but I can’t get away from how excellent GK1 is and yes, I am one of those people who love all the voice acting including the narrator!
Match 2 - I was always more of a Sierra guy than Lucasarts and while Monkey Island does have a place in my heart, KQVI captured my imagination at the time in a way that none of the previous KQ games had and still remains an absolutely excellent game - if you like that sort of thing. Also, although the single of “Girl in the Tower” is terrible, the way the themes from it are used in incidental music in the game is very fitting and good. So my vote goes to King’s Quest VI
3.5 time winner of the “Really Annoying Caption Contest Saboteur” Award!
1 - Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, no FMV - no problems
2 - King’s Quest VI, but it sure feels like a missing opportunity for MI2. I.m. skeleton dance vs. skeleton dance!
PC means personal computer
1 - GK1
2 - Monkey Island 1
Really disappointed that Blackwell missed out by only one or two votes, because although Monkey Island is such a favourite of mine, I would have voted against it for Blackwell. And although Kings Quest will always hold a special place in my heart, it has to be MI this round.
Oh my, Blackwell Epiphany should be here, it really deserved to be here in top 16. I have huge respect for classics: Roberta Williams, Tim Schafer, Ron Gilbert are giants forever, but there should be new heroes too and Blackwell series is just pure diamond.
Just look Dave Gilbert`s name.. Nomen est omen
And then, my votes:
- Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
- The Secret of Monkey Island
Playing: 1) Broken Sword 5 2) Road 96
1. no vote - I absolutely love GK1 (it says so in the quotes), but I haven’t gotten around to GK2 yet and well, frankly, I can’t say that GK2 is NOT going to be even better…
2. The Secret of Monkey Island - KQ6 is good, real good, but the first Monkey Island is better in my book.
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka

Completely agree. I really do think that when more people have played BE (and the complete series) then BE will be way up there in people’s views as one of the all time greats.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (Both are among my top favorites, but I consider Since of the Fathers my all time favorite game. I think it’s among the best written games of all time (So is Gabe 2 as well) and was one of the first games that had mature plot and themes. Most importantly it creates a world, mystery and characters I never get tired of. The biggest difference between the games for me is that I much prefer the voice acting performances of the first over the FMV ones of the sequel.)
The Secret of Monkey Island (The first adventure game I ever played and it’s been among my favorites ever since.)
1. GK1
2. SoMI
M1 - No vote because I didn’t play them but I’m curious about how this one will go. If I had to predict I would say GK2 would be my favourite.

It was another very difficult match as both games in my mind are brilliant but I did choose GK2 because it has the easier interface, I liked the FMV aspect & IMO the game stands up better today - hence the reason for a remake of the 1st!
