inb4 Castlevania is made by kojima is a typo like Mikumi

Where did I claim he made the series? He produced one Castlevania game, the first Lords of Shadow game. The word “games” followed that one because it was the last in a list of games, not because I necessarily meant he made multiple games in that series. Good to see you focusing on something like that to draw the attention away from the fact that you have no counterargument.

No point in arguing when you have audacity to say all Devs are wrong

I didn’t say all devs are wrong. I said Jun Takeuchi was wrong in that video, and I said that Mikami having coined the term ‘survival horror’ doesn’t make his 20-year-old definition still valid.

you also havent played the games in question to comment on their design

I’m not commenting on the design, I’m commenting on the genre and its definition. I don’t need to have played all those games fully to know what genre they belong to (especially since it’s not my favourite genre as it puts me on edge too much). Besides, I’ve seen more gameplay vids, watched more people play it live and I’ve actually played parts of more of these games than you realize.

And I’m also not saying Evil Within and Resident Evil aren’t survival horror because they are.

We fans have tasted both

And obviously automatically assume non-fans haven’t. You’re strongly coming across as one of those elitist fans who looks down on all non-fans and casual fans alike.

I have played all in question including latest RE7(whose Devs said is not Outlast and true SH, and i agree since i finished it)

RE7 not being Outlast doesn’t mean RE7 and Outlast can’t still both be survival horror, which is my entire point, and which is a point you either seem to miss or are willfully ignoring because Mikami’s word is gospel to you.

Well speak about yourself, he is more well known than you can imagine

I wasn’t speaking about myself, since I DO know the name.

you need to check forums not wiki to check the influence of his design and if gamers know Mikumi

You’re overestimating forums and their representation of the player pool, imo. Also, now who’s misspelling his name? Did my typo in that earlier post confuse you?

In before claims of “just testing you”. Innocent

@Tim

I respect skills, talent of gamers and creators
Creators who made legit game, to be played not watched
Where difficulty is main part of the game and tension and yes for hardcores not elitists
I myself aint that good in NioH but that doesnt mean i can discount gamedesign
I respect the pool of gamers who are finishing madhouse of RE7 as we speak than who watch games that are totally gameplay focused not like TTG

I put more stock in them than mikumi or CV by Kojima or people who arent in genre or who are elitist enough to deny Game devs legit creation let alone denying a guy like me,without playing and spending more time on analyzing wiki and just denial without playing and calling others with no good argument

You remind me of this lady, Geoff got her in first question

(2:32)

Technically you can comment on Graphics on vids but not gameplay/gamedesign until you play which is the whole point , not the same experience as movies

Just like not every Scifi is Cyberpunk
Not every Horror is Survival Horror
You dont survive an automated, dead AI, checkpoint heavy game
That game survives you
Mikumi made an excellent recipe of gamedesign which needs perfect balance or its not the same recipe

Wow, the level of disrespect you’re showing me is astounding. Aside from the fact that you clearly didn’t read anything I wrote, you flat out state you disrespect me (and not only as a player) and then compare me to someone laughable who went on a ridiculous crusade based on nothing more than misinterpreted hearsay that lacked all context and any actual knowledge of what she was crusading against.

Just because you’ve only seen someone else play doesn’t mean that didn’t give you a good impression on how the game was designed and how the gameplay worked. But like I said, it’s not because I’ve stated often that I can’t handle most survival horror games and action horror games, that I haven’t played any. I rarely finished them, but I HAVE played most of the earlier mainstream survival horror games for quite a few hours (the first two Alone in the Dark games, the first three Resident Evil games, the first two Silent Hill games, etc.), as well as a bunch of action horror games (the first two Alien vs Predator games, stuff like Doom3, Dead Space, Bioshock, even things like Painkiller). There are more but these are off the top of my head.
After 2007(-ish), I stopped actually playing them and settled for gameplay videos and/or watching a friend play to get a grasp on the game. I still like being aware of the games out there, what they look like and play like, even if I know full well I probably wouldn’t like actually playing them (because exceptions were too rare to be worth the added effort).

Just like not every Scifi is Cyberpunk
Not every Horror is Survival Horror

I’m confused. Did anyone say it was???

Mikumi made an excellent recipe of gamedesign which needs perfect balance or its not the same recipe

Agreed, not the same recipe. But it can still be the same genre - again, my entire point.

But since you seem adamant in disrespecting me and completely avoiding my point, this conversation is now over.

ridiculous crusade based on nothing more than misinterpreted hearsay that lacked all context and any actual knowledge of what she was crusading against

Just like that woman cant understand the intricacies of games and nature within it
You are also generalizing genres and design within and calling CT to Outlast with one uni dimensional perspective
One constant though , both you and her havent played games in vid which i mentioned
in my point, thats why i posted, not saying your gaming exp is that of her

Just because you’ve only seen someone else play doesn’t mean that didn’t give you a good impression on how the game was designed and how the gameplay worked

Then that lady got the impression right too??
Not the same thing, you have to finish the game
Infact there is this reviewer who reviewed RE7 without finishing Madhouse mode, and blaming AI and Checkpoints, if he only had played the real mode
So yeah, dissect gameplay by playing, the feeling you get by achieving yourself and struggle mentioned by Jun or Mikumi is not equal to watching
Same reason why Darksouls was bashed initially, heck people even discount animations by watching only on playing they realize why the janky nature in that game was part of design

settled for gameplay videos and/or watching a friend play to get a grasp on the game

Same thing , read above, play the game
If you are not, then atleast dont crap on Devs or those who are speaking from first hand experience

I know full well I probably wouldn’t like actually playing them (because exceptions were too rare to be worth the added effort)

Basically, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about

Yup thats not elitist
Esp when you say its neither your forte nor your interest but you have watched vids to get idea of gameplay???
You flat out disrespect Devs achievements without playing the game he is talking about
You have carteblanche to say all but if i call you on watching vids, its disrespectful
(which aint my intention, nor i think it is)

Agreed, not the same recipe. But it can still be the same genre - again, my entire point

Here recipe is metaphor for genre/gamedesign, you missed the entire point
So genre/recipe cannot be same, even if you change small ingredient in gameplay
Not avoiding your point, you still dont get it
CT and RE are different recipes, they are drinks yes one is soft other is hard
or one is Ham burger other is Beef
Which is quite funny because you are using terms action horror and why not calling it
survival horror Grin

In a nutshell.
He is not father thats marketing BS, still not many know his name
Dev doesnt know what he is talking about, i do though i dont play now nor enjoy
I have played some early games but thats it
He’s got it DEAD WRONG and i am not elitist
Nomad treating him like gospel, since he has played and finished all, but he doesnt know
I havent played and finished all but i have better explanations because i watch them

both the game’s Wiki page as its fan’s Wikia page

Devs can go to hell, Wikipedia is gospel

Just like that woman cant understand the intricacies of games and nature within it

Please. Her entire gaming experience was basically Pac-Man and Tetris, and she was raging about the pornographic nature of a video game that had one single optional sex scene after romancing a single character in a 20+ hour game period and where a single side boob was the most that was visible. She hadn’t even seen a single Mass Effect screenshot.

You are also generalizing genres

Am I really? Or are you overnarrowing genres?

and design within and calling CT to Outlast with one uni dimensional perspective

I’m actually saying very little about design, and am mostly talking about the genre. Those aren’t the same thing, you know. Wink

One constant though , both you and her havent played games in vid which i mentioned in my point, thats why i posted

Congratulations, you got me. I haven’t played those games.
But I’ve seen enough of them to be able to say what genre they belong to, and I haven’t found a single source that’s NOT calling them “survival horror”. You’re the only one.

Then that lady got the impression right too??

She saw nothing of the game. In essence, “her sister knew a guy who used to live next door to someone that saw a video of Mass Effect”. She knew nothing. Hence why she was destroyed and why Fox was ridiculed (even more than usual) for putting her in front of the camera.

Not the same thing, you have to finish the game

“You only played 2/3s of a game / you got stuck on the third boss-fight / you stopped halfway through because the game sucked / etc. - Your opinion is invalid.”

Infact there is this reviewer who reviewed RE7 without finishing Madhouse mode, and blaming AI and Checkpoints, if he only had played the real mode

So, the “real mode” is the difficulty level that you can only unlock after you’ve already beat the game once? And it’s only then that AI and checkpoints work as they should?
Yeah, brilliant game design that. Make your game weaker than it should be, and put all the good stuff in a mode that needs to be unlocked first, so you’re sure that only a tiny percentage of your entire player base will see it. It’s genius!

Mikumi

He might have to change his name by this point.

Same reason why Darksouls was bashed initially, heck people even discount animations by watching only on playing they realize why the janky nature in that game was part of design

Please point out where I even *mentioned* graphics in this discussion.

If you are not, then atleast dont crap on Devs or those who are speaking from first hand experience

Again, I’m not crapping on Mikami and Takeuchi’s achievements. I’m arguing their “survival horror” definitions.

Esp when you say its neither your forte nor your interest but you have watched vids to get idea of gameplay???

It is my interest, or I wouldn’t be watching the vids. It’s just not my thing because it puts me on edge too much. I’d rather not die for real when playing a game.
I mainly check the vids for the horror games to gauge whether or not I’d be able to play them without suffering a heart attack every other minute, because I am interested.

You flat out disrespect Devs achievements without playing the game he is talking about

Yet again, all I’m arguing is their definition of the survival horror genre.

You have carteblanche to say all but if i call you on watching vids, its disrespectful
(which aint my intention, nor i think it is)

It’s not about calling me on watching vids. You don’t have to call me on something I’m openly admitting.

I’m talking about you dedicating an entire paragraph on respecting the talent and skill of hardcore gamers and all those people that are obviously not me. Real subtle.

Here recipe is metaphor for genre/gamedesign, you missed the entire point
So genre/recipe cannot be same, even if you change small ingredient in gameplay
Not avoiding your point, you still dont get it

No, YOU don’t get it. Compare Gemini Rue to Machinarium. Different recipe. Same genre. Both are third-person point-and-click science-fiction adventure games. Both are nothing alike.

Amnesia, Clocktower and Evil Within are very different games, different recipes. Same genre.

CT and RE are different recipes, they are drinks yes one is soft other is hard
or one is Ham burger other is Beef

All this “soft vs hard” talk is irrelevant. Softporn is still porn. Soft survival horror is still survival horror.

But being vehement about “respecting hardcore players” and then being dismissive towards all things “soft” claiming they’re not from the same genre is very much elitist.

And then you have the gall to call ME elitist?

I often play games in genres that I don’t particularly like (including RTS and action-platformers) because I understand that not liking the genre doesn’t mean that said genre can’t produce any good games or games that I do happen to like. I give well-received games that are outside my preferred genres a chance because they might very well surprise me.
How very elitist of me…

Which is quite funny because you are using terms action horror and why not calling it
survival horror Grin

Funny thing that: I’m using the term “action horror” for games that are not survival horror but that are *gasp* action horror, and I’m noting the difference between both genres.
How silly of me. I should obviously be interchanging them per your suggestion. You, who obviously are so well-versed in the definition of genres.

In a nutshell.

Twist and turn my words like that so you can use them for mockery again, and I ban you. Are we clear, Mr. Disrespect?

Apocalypse Now the Video game.

Meh

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.
