Poor Josh…:(

I thought they did a great job. At least subbi acknowledged something he DID like about the game, unlike some.

Honestly, I would rate this game at about a 6 or 7. There’s no shame in a score like that - it’s a hilarious game that’s a little short, some painful backtracking and with the art design being a mixed bag. Destined to be a cult game, which is what this series has become.

I loved the game and I agree with this totally - it’s not a very ambitious title but it does what it sets out to do incredibly well (visual style mishmash and occasional glitches aside).  Enjoyable experience but the actual “game” part is still as lacking as its always been. Compared to the average Ipad app, it is very polished, which will hopefully get it enough sales to get the whole original trilogy reloaded.

It’s the first game in about 10 years where I bothered to click almost every option just to hear the narration.  I’ve mostly given up on modern point-and-clicks due to their emphasis on the “look at the pretty graphics” style of gameplay that’s light on interactivity and low on text (that’s usually horrible translated anyway).

Well, the background art is quite good, and so is the music. The rest, like the character art or animations, the sense of humour or the gameplay mechanics, are just a matter of taste. What I don’t like, ten other people might, and vice versa.

I hope LSLR does well enough to warrant LSLR2 to be made, as the more I think about it the more I feel it has the potential to turn into the best game in the series. It does need considerably bigger budget though and definetly more time on animations and character design.

Well, comedy is subjective.

That universal truth notwithstanding, I still can’t fathom anyone not laughing AT LEAST once during the game. Trying out all sorts of ridiculous things…there was just SO MUCH silliness to indulge in. BUT…I suppose there’s a certain level of immaturity required to get the most out of it…;)

But I digress. Curious to know what DOES tickle the naysayer’s funny bones though.

I didn’t laugh once. From the opening narration, with the stuff in brackets read out loud, the comedy just rubbed me completely the wrong way. It’s a type of comedy relying too much on exposure for my taste, with the jokes laid on far too thick, and the game is very in your face with its jokes, if that makes any sense. Also, I really can’t laugh at a penis-shaped road, and what a thing like that usually does, is reducing the tolerance I have for whatever else the game throws at me.

To compare, the comedy in a game like Monkey Island relies much more on subtlety and wordplay and, to a extent, (geeky) in-jokes. I like my comedy mostly subtle and clever, even when both those properties aren’t immediately apparent, like, for example, the random (and very layered) absurdity of a troupe like Monty Python. Larry is also very silly, but it’s just not my type of silly.

But let’s not bicker too much about comedy here, subjective as it is. Here in the Netherlands I’m also in the minority when it comes to what I find funny and what not Wink

I’m really surprised at reviewers who are surprised and criticize the game for what it WAS when it was released. This is a remake. Those reviewers are either newcomers, or non-adventure players as far as I see it.

That said, I think the remake could have really “remade” some things better:

1) It’s nice to keep the old interface for people who prefer to play it like in the original, but I think it would have been also wise to put an optional “smart cursor”, or at least hotspot names.

2) The inventory screen should really disappear once we move away the mouse of it.

3) The graphics look cheap and “casual” - the backgrounds are OK, but the character models particularly look like from an average Big Fish game. It’s nice to have a HD resolution, but I’d be satisfied with 640x480 with the above average artistic style. Also, the interface, inventory objects, font… look like from a browser-based Flash game.

Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale

Not that I disagree but it’s very difficult for them. They can’t make it too realistic, and full cartoon in HD is rather pointless. They tried a mixture and did a pretty good job, unfortunately a few things ended up clashing which made it look “cheap” and “casual”.

Off-topic, I wonder how much of the stereotype of nerds being bad with women comes from them getting their idea of the dating world from LSL. Al Lowe had an incredibly misanthropic view of dating and women in his games. If it weren’t complete fiction it would be the most depressing funny game ever made. (though, is it complete fiction?)

There was one dude on the Replay Forums who was obsessed with getting revenge on the dog who pees on you AND Fawn.  So, heh, take it from there.  I mean this dude would not let it go that you should be able to get revenge on them - it was kind of disturbing.

That said - it’s a different world today than it was in 1987.  You have to drop a bit of the pointed cynicism that pervades society and pop-culture today if you’re going to enjoy a wacky, mildly offensive game like Larry.  It’s not meant to be taken seriously - it’s a video game, and there was a time where it wasn’t a crime for a game to be merely silly fun.

One of the best (or worst) examples of this is the main casino room, with a number of clashing art styles crammed together in the same screen. The difference between the characters is extremely jarring (and indeed very much like a Big Fish game), and the proportions between the them aren’t right, either. It’s screens like these they should have worked a little harder on, because right now it looks like no-one cared to make an effort, even though I’m sure they did their best.

True. And it’s not like the men are portrayed any better than the women. I just hope people (in 1987 mostly 15 year olds on their dad’s PC) realise that love/dating is NOT at all like how Larry experiences it.

And really, doesn’t Larry get what he deserves? He’s not really innocent, not really out for ‘love’, he’s very sleazy and if I was a woman I’d be heartless with him too - if not downright manipulative and mean like most of Larry’s targets. Maybe LSL2 and 3 are a different story, which makes them more interesting for a remake.

Anyone know when the iOS version is released ?

They’ve stated several times that Apple is scrutinizing it, and they’re merely waiting for approval from Apple.

So it’s out of their hands and into Apples at this point - so there’s no definite answer at the moment.

Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded received a *FANTASTIC* write up over at Rock Paper Shotgun: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/06/27/wot-i-think-leisure-suit-larry-reloaded/

We all know RPS is one of the better websites on gaming even though they treated these Kickstarters with the most scrutiny (they basically did their job). I like the article because it’s basically pushing for Al to go straight to Larry 8. :3

And the author of that article has a few ideas on how to go about bringing Larry 2 into fruition:

According to Paul Trowe, this has sold 250,000 copies on PC in the first week. Even with their split with codemasters and the download services’ take, that should still put them north of a million dollars to make the next game.

There’s always been a weird kind of anxiety with Kickstarter-funded games that the only people that will want them are the backers. My instinct was always that backers make up a very small segment of the potential buyers, but it’s good to see that affirmed with some real numbers.
