Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Sunday 27 January 2013
Ah, Geeka! A little memorable drop in an ocean of mediocrity…
I finished playing Shannara yesterday, and as something coming from both Legend and the Coles it was a huge disappointment. With its derivative world, tired story, flat characters, pedestrian puzzle design and areas you rushed on from before they had a chance to start becoming interesting, it was eminently mediocre. It’s a good thing I had played Death Gate before, or I really would be wondering what all you people think was so great about Legend games.
It did get a little bit better at times: the dark magic rituals in Tyrsis showed some promise (unfortunately never built upon), and it was nice that, at the end, the game finally realised that it had several characters in the party with different abilities and could make use of that for better puzzle design—but that was too little too late.
Oh well.
Brilliant game to play on a quiet, carefree summer nights. Can’t wait to finish it. (and for summer, that is)
Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale

Sounds a lot like the books.
