Wilco, question for you.
I wanted to finish Spellcasting 201 after all, and I was foolish enough to try the 144 possible combinations of the Appliance on Friday. I found nine persons to impersonate, including myself. I have moved the body and I guess most of the eight persons would be good enough to get me past the university gate. (I used one of the profs, to be on the safe side.) But I haven’t found anything fun to do with the others yet. Lyle was scared of me-Lyle, and Chris congratulated me on my Chris impersonation. That’s all. Do you have any tips for me?
Also did all those combinations… But I don’t think I found anything more interesting to do with most of them, the caffeteria guy was enough for everything on what the Appliance function is needed. One thing, you don’t need to take anything else outside besides the Spell Book for that assignment. Just go and do it to get the last piece of the Appliance to start the final part
Rats! When players go to the trouble of trying 144 combinations the developer put there on purpose, they should be rewarded for their diligence and patience. Are you reading this, Mr Meretzky?

Yeah, they introduced a new cool mechanic with good puzzle possibilities but didn’t really do anything with it…
I’ve started Gateway but due to Stasis/Until Dawn havent’s progressed much, just arrived the first planet. The game also has a ton to read at the beginning. I go like the engine upgrade and the cool intro.
Also I chuckeld at on of the news in the Commset. Something like (game is set in 2077 or something):
“Star Trek XX movie started production sith a budget of 600 million dollars and studio expects it to reach 2 billion to break even.” - I’m sure that sounded a ridiculous budget at the time… Not anymore
Finished Gateway.
Liked it a lot, the beginning has a ton of stuff to read but it’s mostly to set the player in the world., after that it’s full exploration mode.
Never read a Frederik Pohl book but this definitely got me interested, have no idea now close it is to the book but the whole setting for the story immediately interesting and has huge potential.
Gateway is a uncovered alien space base in an asteroid that acts as an hub for launching ships into other places. The space base is empty with no sign of the aliens and the humans have no idea how to control the ships. Pilots just go in the ships into random locations, find out stuff, gather tech and return to the base.
The player is one of those pilots so ofcourse the basis of the game is just exploring the new planets. Very Star Treky and fun.
The game is also the easiest of the ones I played so far, linear and with absolutely no dead-ends (that I noticed). It also as a clock and calendar but you can take the time you want to explore everything (except for the last part).
Puzzles are very logic and almost all limited to which own world, which means you can “solve” each planet puzzles without fearing you are missing some item from another place.
The planets are interesting with different kinds of puzzles. Sometimes you have to work out the machinery, other times understand how the local fauna works. There is even one where you can solve the puzzles in very different ways and are rewarded for doing the “pacifist” way.
Technically there is some evolution for the first time: game has cutscenes, more music, screens with more animation. All around feels more modern.
Back to school now (Spellcasting 301)
Finished Gateway.
. . .
OK, now I want to play this game.

Definitely worth it if you like scifi. And it doesn’t really have frustrating elements. Not many deaths, and game warns you about them. Didn’t have many problems with the text parser. There are some hard puzzles but mostly within logic.
Gateway is the first (chronologically) I like. However, I might be influenced by my love of Pohl. It’s just such a cool concept.
Do you remember if the story in the book is close to the game?

Are you playing this one?

No, real life got in the way. But I started Spellcasting 301 just now.

Just finished drawing the map for Fort Naughtytail It’s ridiculously big!

It’s in the same world as the book series, so they share the core: humans stumbling on ancient FTL technology and randomly mashing buttons to try and strike gold. The book series is recommended, but he spills his load pretty early (I think book 2 or 3 already introduces the aliens who built everything). Still, I found the theme of futuristic prospecting to be very original and interesting to explore.
Gateway 2 I also liked, but not as much as the first. It starts with a really nice sequence but then the gateway bits were a bit worse. It also sort of spoils the books, though I’d first read them and then played the games.

It’s already bigger than 201 at the start and I’m not looking forward to all the running around and backtracking that entails. But thanks to your thread I’m determined to finish the Spellcasting series for once and for all, and I certainly did enjoy 201 much more than the first time I tried it. Amazing how much I’ve forgotten over the years. Like the copy protection in 301. After more than a dozen trial-and-error attempts at the carpet sequence I finally read the instructions in the manual. But I like how Legend punishes pirates instead of making it impossible to continue playing.
Thought of the Day: Sorcerers do it with their staff.
Yeah, I know. But before you say anything, I thought of that one myself and I’m actually quite pleased with it. The Meretzky humor must have rubbed off on me.

So you don’t mind “dead ends” when the sequence is really nice. But I agree, the part with the walkie-talkies is fantastic.

If you haven’t already, try reading the legalese in the manual as well. At first glance, it looks like the standard boilerplate you can find in any manual, and for the most part it is. But if you read it more carefully you’ll find (at least in the ones I read) a lawyer joke, a ridiculous over-the-top example of the kind of damage they won’t take responsibility for, etc.
No, I hadn’t read it. Thanks, love it!
For all those poor people out there without a Legend game (play one now!), here’s the lawyer joke from my The Lost Adventures of Legend manual.
Q: What do you get when you cross a Librarian with a Lawyer?
A: All the information you need, but you can’t understand a word of it.

Lol, didn’t even cross my mind reading it but there’s some fun stuff hidden:

I might try to read them at a later time, they do sound interesting. For now I’m anxious to get to the second game, the ending of the first one made it clear where they are going with it

Completely appropriate, fits with the theme Btw, I’m thinking Meretzky had something against someone named Hillary, I just “found” her in the third game and… Come on!
As for the game, I think it’s so open that I think I’ll not make much progress without an walkthrough… Or just keep constantly reloading. At least I got a lot of money from the casino and bought everything…

Yes. I’m not a very politically correct person, but I really didn’t like that.

You’re way ahead of me. I’ll get back to it later tonight.
