It’s kind of early, but you can see a clear Top 10 emerging, based on the amount of points some of these games got sofar, looking especially at the games with more than 200 points.

So here we are:

1. The Curse of Monkey Island             235
2. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers       223
3. The Secret of Monkey Island           223 (fewer 7 point votes than GK)
4. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars   216
5. The Longest Journey                 211
6. Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within       203
7. Grim Fandango                     200
8. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis     198
9. Day of the Tentacle                 195
10. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge       194

That is not a bad list at all…..though I would switch some of the games in their order a bit Laughing

It does depend in group the top games were on, in an uneven group the most popular games would get more points then in balanced groups.

It’s like Real Madrid in a group with Basel, Liverpool and Ludogorets - of course they are going to win all games in the group Smile

But that is solid Top 10, begins to show how popular Lucasarts is

Well, not quite.
One group has 2 games in this Top10, such as the group with COMI and Indiana Jones. Both games got more points that most top games from other groups. Quite some groups had no game with close to or more than 200 points. I don’t think it matters much what other games they were compared against.

I do think the amount of points is a strong measure for later success in this tournament aswel.

I’m not so sure that you’re right Subbi. Take group M for example. The only group of all that had all 4 qualifying with 100+ votes. Swap any of those 4 with one of the group winners that had only that 1 into 3 figures and the swapped one could well be in the top ten at the expense of the one moved over to group M (if you see what I mean). So I think Wilco’s point has some validation.

Life is what it is.

Maybe this can be a compromise?

Day 1 -  R64 brackets 1&2 open
Day 3 -  R64 brackets 3&4 open
Day 5 -  R64 brackets 5&6 open
Day 7 -  R64 brackets 7&8 open - brackets 1&2 closed
Day 9 -  R64 brackets 3&4 closed
Day 11 - R64 brackets 5&6 closed
Day 13 - R64 brackets 7&8 closed

For anyone curious, I sorted the results from the group stage a few different ways and published it on Google Sheets so you can see it.

Sheet 1 - Sorted by total points
Sheet 2 - Sorted by 7 pt votes
Sheet 3 - Sorted by average points
Sheet 4 - Qualified games only (sorted by total points)
Sheet 5 - Unqualified games only (sorted by total points)

Tie breaking in the sorting is handled the same way Bogi did: Most 7 pts, then most 5 pts, then most 3 pts, etc.

(The nice thing about Bogi’s use of ASCII text with fixed width columns is that it made importing the results into Excel easy, so all of this was easy to do.)

These rankings are, of course, skewed by:
1) what games people have played
2) how stiff the competition was in each group
3) some groups having eight games, while some had nine (which is fine for the tournament voting within groups, but skews the results when ranking all games by points like in my spreadsheet)
4) small sample size
5) possible other factors—For just one example, I’ve been busy with family during the holiday and therefore voted in fewer I-P groups than I did in A-H groups.

But it’s still fun to look at the results. You can see some unqualified games that got a lot of points and might have qualified if they’d been in a less competitive group. You can see some little-voted-for games that have a high average. (It is, though, undetermined whether a small number of votes means fewer people played a game, or some people just didn’t like it enough to give it any points at all.) And so on. Nothing scientific, but hopefully interesting.

Of course, amidst all this horse-racing, it’s important to remember that even the lower ranked games here are awesome, which is why they were entered into the tournament in the first place. Laughing

Handy sheets for reading results

Silent Hill - played by few but loves (another reminder I need to play Shattered Memories…)
Danganronpa a great average of course (but few players) - like VLR and PW
Broken Sword 5 not qualified with 86 points!
Beneath a Steel Sky everybodys second favorite game (most game with 5pts)
Blackwell Epiphany best game from 2014

Lucasarts 11 games qualified
Sierra 9 games qualified

Poor Pepper…

Yes, you and Wilco do have a point here and it does apply to mostly group M, where 4 great games had to compete over the points available. However, I don’t think any of those 4 will eventually land in the Top 10 anyway, but they would certainly rank higher than their current point lists account for.

Also, don’t forget that some groups really do got fewer points than some other groups and that is an indication too. (at least on the popularity of some games) I myself did give all the points in some groups, but none or few in others.

The Top 10 as shown now, based on amount of points, is imo a pretty close to what the end result will look like. I’d be very surprised if not at least 9 of these will be in the final Top 10.

My main gripe is sofar that all 3 Monkey Island games are in there, which seems like a bit much. AG’s Top 100 has the third on a much lower position, but given the popularity of the game amongst our forum users, I really do expect it to stay on pole position.

And Caliburn, if you are reading this Smile your notes posted as instructions in each group thread were invaluable, I would be very grateful if you could done something similar, when we create new bracket threads

Sure thing. Here’s a draft of how the thread for each bracket could look, complete with one possible scoreboard (modified from your ASCII art brackets) and instructions. Smile I used games that didn’t actually survive the group stage just for the sake of an example.

Vote for one game in each versus match that you’d like to see advance to the next round. Feel free to skip any match that you don’t want to vote in.

Voting for this bracket will end on X January at 23:59 GMT.

The four games in each bracket that survive their versus match will go on to the next round (the Round of 32), and so on, until only one game remains and wins the tournament for our community’s favorite adventure game.

Not sure what this tournament is all about? See the Overview thread here. Don’t worry if you missed previous rounds. Join in and have fun!

And here’s an alternate scoreboard possibility that would be easier to create and maintain than the brackets. One still annoying thing, though, is the Code function will trigger random colors. Edit: I’ve now eliminated the red color by using your apostrophe substitution trick.

As always, Bogi, feel free to modify as desired.

Group I - Absolutely no surprises here, maybe Night of the Rabbit wasn’t that sure for advancement, and it’s evident by having the fewest points of all games that reached Top64. Probably the weakest group.

Group J - Again rather expected results, only didn’t expect To the Moon (playing on emotions, no puzzles) to be ranked so high, especially not above Hand of Fate, one of the best VGA age games outside of Lucas and Sierra.

Group K - Pretty strong group, Grim Fandango slightly underperformed, I expected a result closer to CMI. I also expected I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream to finish at second place, with Loom closely behind. I also thought both TWD and StS2 would be above Gray Matter, that maybe really is a dark horse, as Diego said.
