yes should be anything he can turn out to be madman, a robot, the devil himself .. I am sure now that I put the inquiry in very bad shape , sorry .. lets say the protagonist turn out to be someone else than he/we think he/she is.

Guybrush turned out to be a kid in an amusement park. I know there were 3 more Monkey Island games, but that’s basically how MI2 ends. And it was never properly explained.
