Default Best graphics in a 2D game

I was just reading a little bit in the recent Tony Tough thread and this question occurred to me: Which game has the best 2D graphics? Games with 3D models on 2D backgrounds don't count. I'm talking pure 2D. I don't think I've played enough of the older games to really have a good say in answering this question myself.

Also, I guess my hope is for the question to produce some nice reminiscing so as a side question, which old-time AGs (I guess we're still going with 2D here) just blew you away in terms of graphics when they came out? On that note, I would have to say that I thought Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis was just a gorgeous game when I got it so very long ago. Its funny: back then, I thought Sophia was so hot and now, she's just so pixellated. Oh well. I still like her spunk anyway.

My favourites are The Curse of Monkey Island, Loom, Kyrandia 2, The Dig, Space Quest 5, and King's Quest 7. I also really like scenes from Monkey Island 2.

Stupid Invaders! yeah I never got to play it though but the demo was fun/weird, wonder if I can find that game somewhere..

But CMI definately beats any other pure 2D game hands down. Anyone saying otherwise is on crack!

Don't recall any platypus-style things in Stupid Invaders. However, this looks likely...

There's always Runaway.

I'll also put in my votes for Monkey Island 3, and, for its time, Monkey Island 2.

Despite it's low resolution, MI2. Also, CMI, The Dig, the Kyrandia games and the two first Broken Sword games are full of 2d goodness.

Runaway was cel-shaded 3d (at least, characters were)

The Dig? Are you serious? To me, especially considering its 1995 date, The Dig has some of the more disappointing gameplay graphics of any LEC adventure. (cutscenes are good though)
