Adventure Game Scene of the Day - Monday 25 April
The Vacuum
Back in space this week for The Vacuum.
You play as Leo Wallace, a student on his way back home from University to his home planet of Whitefall with his girlfriend for the summer break. Near future sci-fi though it may be, students are still poor and therefore instead of a luxurious passenger liner ship, Leo has taken a room aboard a cargo vessel, along with several other passengers. Cheap and cheerful is the order of the day, well, cheap anyway!
After a comfortable enough night’s rest they awake to find breakfast all but non existent and conditions rather bare. It isn’t long before the ship is shaken by what appears to be an explosion and the airtight blast doors descend. 2 of the passenger corridors appear to have lost pressure (and therefore air) and to make matters worse pretty much all of the crew seem to have gone missing. The mystery deepens as you investigate stowaways, your fellow passengers and why it was that the blast doors for the two depressurised passenger corridors were already down before the explosion, along trying to find out who or what may have caused it.
So graphics aren’t the strong point of this game but don’t be fooled by the simple looks, this is quite an involved and well thought out game. Quite a large cast of characters, all animated and moving around, choices to be made which lead to multiple endings, things to investigate, a mystery to explore… all this leads to a very nice little game indeed.
It isn’t voiced but has a good range of sound effects and some background music in places which is OK. Furthermore it comes with French, German and Italian language options, which is often the sign of a good freeware game as it means that people who played it liked it enough to offer to translate it to their native tongue.
3.5 time winner of the “Really Annoying Caption Contest Saboteur” Award!
