There’re many weird things about The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard - it was a late 1998, ambitious (you could say AAA) kind of game, and it was MS-DOS based (!). Next, it started the series of The Elder Scrolls Adventures, which were to accentuate the exploration and puzzles, and in an adventure game fashion focus on a pre-determined hero unlike the original RPG series, but later games that were planned never came out. The story is also much closer to a something like the Gothic series more than the fantasy- filled Daggerfall and Arena (centering on Cyrus, the Redguard, who are the defeated fraction in a world now ruled by Tiber Septim and his Imperial Region, who comes to an island looking for his missing sister), with a brilliant music and atmosphere reminiscent of One Thousand and One Nights. Others could say it was also a Bethesda arcade adventure answer to a Tomb Raider popularity. In reality, the action gameplay is very simple - with one action button (for sword fighting mostly), which is also the “Use” button when not in fighting mode, to talk with characters, use items, open doors etc.

Finally, it is possibly the only game in the universe that is running at the exact same framerate for most users, almost 20 years ago and now! Grin In 1998, it worked smoothly only on 3dfx and big processor power, and now, it runs as crap on everything that isn’t Windows 98 Smile It is also one of the biggest GOG fails, because just integrating DOSBox into the exe file isn’t enough (turning OpenGL on in the configuration makes for a somewhat better framerate, but still choppy). And I’ve seen countless methods on internet for installing and running it, but few have survived to tell the tale. Crazy
