Adventure Game Scene of the Day - Tuesday, 20 October
A spiritual ancestor to Fallout and Diablo, Veil of Darkness is one of those games that fell into oblivion just like obscure British pop bands before The Beatles. In reality, it’s much more adventurey than those, and strikingly similar in atmosphere to Shadow of the Comet, that was released the same year (and in a broader sense, to Dracula: Resurrection).
Moving around is probably one of the weakest links of the game, as it’s not comfortable like in the similar isometric-view games that came later. Some of the RPG elements are “curses” that befall on our hero (like the aging curse, where your portrait changes from blonde to gray hair), and certain level of non-linear exploration typical to open-world RPGs. There’s the combat as well (you’re not carrying pitchfork and shovel for nothing!), which has 3 “difficulty” levels. Still, most of time you’ll need to explore the area and push the story forward aimed towards the mysterious, dark figure from the long and cheese intro, by involving yourself in a dialogue with the people of the valley that the world forgot, doing inventory puzzles and even dealing with a light “text-adventure” feature by pursuing certain topics typing the word by yourself.
