The McCarthy Chronicles: Episode 1

From a completed series last week, we move this time to a game which purports to be the first in a series but which is unlikely ever to see an episode 2. More is indeed the pity.

A film-noir inspired supernatural detective story, the first thing you cannot help but notice is how amazing it looks. Nice weather effects (rain obviously!) help set the tone of the game and the feel mirrors the screenshots perfectly - really dark. There is certainly a horror/gruesome element to proceedings right from the very beginning, so if you’re in the mood for a fun cartoony game or have young children in the room with you it’s probably best to come back to this game another time! Wink

Down on his luck Rick McCarthy receives a call from a potential new client. She sounds in distress and well, “noir” detectives being the last bastion of chivalry that they are, he agrees to meet her at a nearby church, only to find her body, mutilated and nailed to the wall. Overall, this game has an intro that grabs your attention!

The only likely clue leads you to the investigation of an old gloomy manor house/hotel. Is everything as it seems? Of course not!

What really makes this game great are the look and the feel - which are excellent, the writing - which is pretty good and the voice acting - which is really wonderful, especially for a no-budget indie game.

Puzzles are a little thin on the ground and you’re unlikely to get stuck anywhere for too long but, although it isn’t exactly a fast moving game, it is gripping somehow and left me wanting more for sure.

Not the longest game for sure but well worth a try.

The game seems interesting Intense Degree - does the story conclude or do you need the further episodes to make sense of it?

Just went through it and that was pretty cool. I agree it has a cool noir feel, with black and white colours and rain and grainy effects. The voice acting was surprisingly decent.

And anytime In the House, In a Heartbeat is used it just elevates things Thumbs Up

What happened to the developers? No more episodes?

Don’t know if Intense agrees but I think It has a “conclusion”. Most at least is explained even if the action could go on

Yep, completely agree, it is self contained enough to not be too annoying.

Developer is one guy (mostly) and while he has gone on to make other games sadly there has been no more McCarthy.
