Adventure Game Scene of the Day - Friday 7 August

Casual Friday

Your father was both a movie mogul and a consummate inventor. Twenty years ago he tested one of his inventions on a human being. It was a rousing success. The test subject died. The military, for whom he created this weapon, was extremely happy, while he was consumed by guilt. Rather than turn the weapon over to the military, he disassembled it, and hid parts of it throughout his massive estate.

Cut to today! your father has recently passed on, and you are to make what you will of the estate. There is also the question of your brother, who disappeared immediately after your father’s death, and has not been seen since. Perhaps reconstructing the weapon is what will solve all the mysteries.

That’s the basic premise of Final Cut - Death on the Silver Screen.

It’s quite exciting. Perhaps too many HO scenes. But also, again, not atypical for an early casual game. There’s a fair amount of FMV. Most of the puzzles are very challenging.

I bought the CE version of this game because it was on sale at the time. But if there is one negative about this game it is that the CE bonus material is required to bring the game to a satisfactory conclusion.

The pictured scene is of one of movie sets constructed on the estate. In fact, there’s a whole movie studio constructed adjacent to the family mansion. LOTS of exploration. available. Could have used an interactive map. I should also mention that this is an extremely long game. Perhaps the longest Casual I’ve ever played.

Heh, you do realize that these casual fridays seriously affect all future community playthrough voting processes, don’t you? Tongue

Sounds interesting. Would definitely vote for it. Smile

Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka

I’m playing the game now and it is very long.  You certainly get your money’s worth.  Just when I think I must be near the end of the extended play I’m not.

There’s too much to-and-froing and I agree that an interactive map would have made it less tiresome.  I lost my bearings a number of times and knew what I should do and where to go but couldn’t remember how to get there - there are an awful lot of scenes.  I like well done HOs so didn’t think there were too many.

All in all, I’m enjoying it but it’s one of those games that I take up and put down while playing others in between.

Yes, get the CE version.  It has plenty of extra play value.  It would be an interesting playthrough, but be prepared to spend a long time on it.

I agree. Even if we only allowed two days for each hour of game-play, the playthrough would last a good sixteen days plus discussion time.

I also was thinking about starting and stopping points for the playing segments, and had a hard time coming up with good ones.

Update: There is a map! I ran across it by accident. It’s accessed with a tab at the bottom of the Journal. Since I didn’t use the journal when playing the basic game, (you don’t need to access the journal to see pictures of puzzles because the Strategy Guide provides the same information,) so I never saw the map tab.

I found it at the very end of the bonus game, and never had a chance to use is. So I don’t know whether it’s interactive.
