Adventure Game Scene of the Day - Tuesday, 4 August
Good game, an even better atmosphere, from a legendary developer (see what I did there?). I’ll write more extensively later as I’m in a hurry now, but let’s see what you thought about Shannara.
Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale
I’ve never played the game but have come across the screenshots so many times I’m interested to know more about it as I love the graphics!
Also learned about this game from DarkEye’s quizzes and it looks intriguing. Is this an adventure/RPG hybrid?

Yes, it’s an adventure/RPG hybrid. This is how the combat looks:
I think I played it or at least part of it but I don’t remember much…
Btw, there’s also a Shannara tv series coming next year
One of a classic. Shannara is a great hybrid game. Together with Death Gate, they are the best I ever played.

How do the mechanics work? Based on that screenshot it looks a bit like trial-and-error.
Is there a lot of combat in it?
And in Death Gate?
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
Most of the combats can be avoided. And it is a bit like trial-and-error. And you have companions with diferent habilities that will help you in the combats. Death Gate is more adventure. Both have great graphics (for the time they were made), good stories and puzzles.
Thanks. I was asking because I had both of these on my list of games to play (together with most of Legend’s catalogue), and frankly, I was entirely unaware that this was a hybrid game. I thought it was 100% adventure.
Not that I mind combat, though.

I’m going to start a playthrough of (hopefully) all Legend games soon, although I’m going to start with the text adventures so Shannara will be one of last.

Hey, that’s great! Please keep us posted.
I feel encouraged to nominate a Legend adventure for the next CP. Or even this one.

The last Legend game that was in a AGCP was Callahan’s and had it huge success. I believe that another one on Death Gate or something similar would have gotten many votes too, especially from people having fond memories from back then….

Cool. Maybe I’ll start a thread like when I played King’s Quest last year, right now I’m in the organizing games and sequence phase.
Off-Topic: Btw, I played a big chunk of A Mind Forever Voyaging now, very interesting game and I’m not having much trouble with the text adventure interface in it.

That would be great!

Yeah, AMFV is one of a kind. Implementor Steve Meretzky once said, grinning sardonically: I wanted to show people what a warmongering Christian Right pandering, environmental trashing, rights trampling asshole Reagan was. And of course the game was so succesful we never had another President like that. I know he said that in Get Lamp, (docu on text adventures, hightly recommended), but I can’t find it any more.

I just found out there is being made a new(ish) TV show based on the game Shannara, which is one of my most loved adventure games. Wow!
Looks good!
Are the Legend games currently available anywhere legally?
