Adventures in the Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment

Something a little different this week from Ben “Yahtzee” Crowshaw (5 days a stranger etc. and the “Zero Punctuation” reviews on the Escapist website)

AGFW is part traditional adventure, part space trader, but for my money it is an adventure game with trading elements. There is some very rudimentary space conflict, but not requiring skill or “action” elements, and which is entertaining enough even if you’re not a fan of Elite or the “X” series etc.

This made it very hard to choose a screenshot, as some of the time you are in a spaceship hopping around trading and some of the time you are down on various planets in traditional adventure game mode. In the end I went for a spaceship one.

The trading is very simple (4 possible commodities being Armaments, Baconburgers, Chocolate and Pornography!) which you can buy from one planet and sell to another at a profit, to fund your purchase of Redshirts, fuel and a couple of other bits and bobs.

The adventure part is the most interesting, usually involving “Redshirts” beaming down to a planet to explore, solve puzzles and further the story - yes there is certainly a story worthy of the name. In fact, once you reach a certain point, the trading and fighting goes completely leaving only story & puzzles etc.

The game is well written with a light and humorous touch on a sci-fi theme. The separate elements of the game mesh together really well. I would seriously love to see more games like this so if an AG/Space Trader Hybrid sounds up your street then you cannot go wrong with this and if there are any devs out there looking to do something a little different and stuck for an idea for a game then do this! You’ll sell one copy for sure! Wink

EDIT: Also, thanks to Wilco for posting for me last week while I was away and also to Advie for making me smile in the comments! Laughing

That sounds right up my alley.

One game that’s not really an adventure game but that I really loved is Star Control 2. I wish there were more games with AG/Space trader/exploration elements…
