Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Saturday 16 August 2014
So many adventures taking place in ancient Egypt and virtually none in the Roman Empire. I only know of two other games but SPQR: The Empire’s Darkest Hour (1997) is the only one I played for a while. First-person, lots of scrolls to read and puzzles that were too difficult for me. What really got to me were the empty streets, you’re all alone in ancient Rome, never get to meet a living soul. Mystian worlds should be alive or exploring will become a drag. This one is desolate.

It may have something to do with the complexity of the stuff needed to be presented graphically:
Everybody wants to be Cary Grant.
Even Me.
-Cary Grant
I remember wandering the empty streets in this game was an eerie experience. It was “semi-educational,” and the story hooked me, as I recall, but I never did manage to finish it. So you never meet any of the characters face-to-face?
You can play SPQR online here:

I Am the Knight of the Order of the Sun!
Fantastic! It does look like you can play the original game there. Thanks SpeedBo.

That’s what I’ve read. I didn’t finish the game, but I never met anyone.
