Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Tuesday 31 December 2013
Being a horror/Lovecraft fan, I liked The Hound of Shadow (1989), though it certainly has its issues. The occult bookstore in the above shot is just one of many places you’ll have to go in this text adventure to free yourself of the curse of the hound or die horribly.
Being a Lovecraft game, is the hound pursuing you identified as a Hound of Tindalos? Those things are nasty.
Whilst not necessarily the best of writers, Lovecraft more than made up for it with the sheer inventiveness of his stories. I’ve played a few good games based on his works as well, the stand-outs for me being Prisoner of Ice and The Lurking Horror. I must have another go at Shadow of the Comet some time, if I can get it to run properly.
If you want a less (or, in some ways, more) reverent approach, try the H P Lovecraft Historical Society Christmas songs.

For real retro gaming nerds, name that game.

It’s been a while since I’ve played it but I don’t remember them referencing it as such, though I would say that it is definitely based off of it to some extent as there are certainly some similarities.
