I'm just standing back in awe at all of you.

I've never been able to understand how anyone can make up a new piece of music they've never heard before. It seems such an impossible feat.

In the week that passed, I was at a five day course in jazz and world music. Great fun, and both educational and inspirational.

Here's a clip from when my group played at the concert the final evening: Spelmansvisa (Fiddler's Song). I play the bassoon.

Thread necromancy!

So, I got around to recording some of my instruments together (well, just the guitar and euphonium, plus some ambient MIDI sounds in the background) using the very same mic I referenced a few posts ago in this thread. You can hear the final product here. I'm quite proud of it; my musical ability, particularly on brass, hasn't ever been at a level where I've been confident enough to do real recordings, up until now. Here's hoping there will be more...

Also, if anyone hasn't seen it yet, my gypsy brass band has a Myspace page with recordings on it. "Ederlezi" features me singing, but it's not the best quality, particularly with the talking in the background at the beginning. On the other two songs, I'm the tuba player.

I agree, 'Just a Dream' is very good - reminiscent (I thought) of one of my favourite songs ever too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcfCL...eature=related

This is something that I made using a guitar, Ableton Live's MIDI sampler thing, drums pilfered and tinkered with from 'Farewell, Farewell' by Gravenhurst, and Goldwave for extra monging of noises.

It's certainly got the atmosphere right!

Maybe after the part around 2:00 and forth (where there's just that one sighing sound) you could up the drums etc. a little and maybe add some slight melody, with a guitar or some instrument that doesnt stand out too much... But as I said, nice atmospheric clip

So I can come and float up there with the rest of you guys.

I have a couple of songs I've created, but I have no way of recording them. Well, I could loan a mic, from a friend but it's a bit more difficult than it sounds... And I could even try to do some improvisational thing with the piano, since I recently discovered some great ways to make it sound really nice (without ever actually learning to play).

Then we should do a "1 Giant Leap" kind of thing, where we make song together, everyone doing something that fits with the rest and so on, and someone compiles it into a song

Squinky, I like the atmosphere you're getting but I'd like it more without the euphonium. It sounds more awkward than the other voices and hogs the spotlight. And I don't care much for the bounciness toward the end; it seems like it's a bit out of character for the piece. The beginning with the guitar strongly reminds me of the music from Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind, but you probably haven't even seen that and it's just a standard guitar part. Anyway, it's got potential.

I'm more of a listener to music, but I sang our national anthem a while ago, to use as a ringtone. I used Garageband and the iMac's built-in microphone. The echo is made by Garageband, but I left it in because I thought it sounds cool.

tsa, I didn't know you had such a beautiful singing voice! If I were you I'd find a (mixed) chorus to sing with. It's a lot of fun and very rewarding. Besides, you'll meet lots of girls.

My mother also said I should be in a choir. But she didn't use the convincing argument that I would meet girls! I'd rather meet 'available' women though

Well, available women is of course what I meant.

If I had the time I'd go back to the chorus I used to be a member of. It was so much fun and it gave me tons of energy to stand in the middle of the chorus and sing. But it's a very ambitious chorus and there's so much more work to do than just sing in order to be a member there.

Thanks for the critique, Mory. Many of the things you point out were done deliberately for personal stylistic reasons, and I realise I can't completely please everyone; however, since you're a gifted musician and all, I'm glad you at least saw something to like in the piece. As for Eternal Sunshine, I actually own that movie, and this isn't the first time something I wrote has been compared to a Charlie Kaufman film.

And thank you everyone else who commented favourably!

I have yet to meet any guys through choir, (at least, guys who aren't unavailable and WAY TOO OLD for me...) but I do find a nice singing voice very attractive.

Hey, Just a Dream is great. Wonderful playing. My only critique is technical in respect to the recording: the horn is just a little hot. You could bring it a few db lower in the mix (but still above the other tracks) and it would be perfect to my ears (not that it isn't already pretty damned great). 2-3 db is all it would take.

I agree with all of the people here, "Just a Dream" has a great atmosphere. Albeit maybe not too original the guitar plucking but it's beautiful! (as thats what matters!).
I just wish i could hear a real guitar being recorded as I feel that the sounds don't sync that well. However it doesn't get in the way for it being a really great song.

Btw does anyone know any good free recording programs? I downloaded a good one but when I tried using it after a month it just won't record stuff even if its supposely free to use

. Got already some improvised videos links and an old myspace music profile, but i need to re record stuff as it's not good enough yet to contribute to this thread.
