FREE Conquests of the Longbow

I've been doing some pretty intense closet cleaning around my mom's place and came across a copy of this classic on 3.5" floppies, still in it's original box with all the manuals. It looks to be in good condition and presumably still works, so long as you can find a floppy drive that works as well.

Anyway, it's yours if you want it for only the cost of shipping. The only catch is that I want to see something creative in return. Post something fun, be it a song, poem, short story, photo, etc... that YOU MADE. In the event that the mods don't take my thread down, I'll check all the posts in the next couple of days and send it to whoever's entry made me smile the most.

Kapeesh? Kapeesh.

Oh, and we'll figure out the shipping when we get there. I'll try to keep it as cheap as possible. By the way, if you haven't played this game yet, it'll rock your tits off. That's a guarantee or your money back.

EDIT: I'll even throw in the disks for Conquests of Camelot, another incredible game, since I'm such a nice guy (yes, I'm still cleaning...)

Sounds fun, I'm in. How about one of my uruguayan sports research articles (that are in spanish)? Or not. We'll see what I come up with.

FYI for those who are interested, these games are also posted free on christy marx's website (she designed the games)

I had a feeling I'd heard Conquests of the Longbow was a free download these days. A download still isn't the same as having the real physical thing though. One of my wife's bookcases, full of game boxes, will testify to that. I'm sure she'd prefer me to take the download option more often. :D

eriq 01-03-2008 09:59 AM

Here is someone who is offering, for free mind you, a BOXED copy of a classic Sierra game and you're bringing up free downloads?

I think it's really cool of him to do this.

I am thinking of my entry....

Flyboy 01-03-2008 10:22 AM

As far as I know every piece of software that's ever been created can be downloaded for free somewhere or other (although I think it's pretty cool that she's offering them on her own site). I just figured that some of you classic AGers would appreciate having all the paperwork that came with it as well.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to some of those entries. Maybe I should put a deadline on this thing. Let's say Friday, January 11th. That sounds about right.

Now make with the creativity!

EDIT: hehehe, gaybrush threepwoody...

Melanie68 01-03-2008 11:02 AM

But many of those free downloads are not exactly legal. I don't think the one's on Christy Marx's site are either (very technically speaking) but we have looked the other way here concerning those considering she's the developer and offering them herself.

When we did the Longbow playthrough last year, ATMachine was bringing up some differences between the download on her site and the boxed version (of which there is an EGA and a VGA version - I have a VGA version). ATMachine was thinking the one Christy is offering might be a very late beta build.

But yeah, if you're a collector (or even not), it's a cool deal!!

Ok, I just finished my entry. I designed an 800x600 Conquests of the Longbow wallpaper. ;)

Flyboy 01-03-2008 11:37 AM

Melanie: I suppose I should have specified that I have the VGA version as well (Camelot, on the other hand is EGA, which I think was the only version made).

Eriq: That's pretty sweet.

I guess I should also mention that the entries don't have to be related to this game or to gaming in any way (although that's not to say that they can't be). I'm just looking for some creativity in general. I'm simple that way.

GhostPirateLechuck 01-03-2008 02:19 PM

Hmmm, I wish I was a bit more creative. This is a very nice thing to do.

Wow, Christian, that's pretty impressive. I don't have much of a chance to go through them now, but I'll take a good long look later on and find something that would be nice to post here.

Just curious, are these painted from photos? from sketches? Are these places you've been?

I'm still waiting for some written work people. Come on, someone post a story or something already!

Anyway, I like where this is heading.

Those are very nice. I'd say they'd make great jigsaws but I'm a bit of a jigsaw nut.

As you wish

Clearance No Sale

One day Flyboy decided that he should clear out some stuff
For games he had aplenty. Room to move, just not enough.
Since, while modern editions are so tiny to behold
A big box packed to bursting did contain the games of old
And while a PDF a proper manual can’t replace
He did have to acknowledge that they take up much less space.
Twas time to say goodbye to his Conquests of the Longbow
Throw such a classic in the bin? Emphatically no!
He knew somewhere where eager AG fans could be located
Where a boxed version of this game would be appreciated
He’d ask no money for it, he’d pass it on for free
All he would ask for in exchange, some creativity
A thread set up, the challenge made, a deadline he did set
Then sat back down to see what from the forumites he’d get
Now time is marching on and that deadline approaching fast
Act now or you may find the opportunity has passed.

I'm smiling, I'm smiling... now if only that was the narration to a Dr. Seuss-style animation then I'd fork over more than just this one game...

eriq 01-05-2008 08:39 PM

LOL. Ok, I'm out - the poem was brilliant.

ChristianIV, I'm admiring your work as well. ;)

stepurhan 01-06-2008 12:45 AM

Don't be silly eriq. Your wallpaper is great too. Especially since it would actually work as wallpaper (having an area where you could keep your desktop items without obscuring the main part of the picture)

Drunken Irishman 01-06-2008 05:12 AM

<panting> Did I make it? Did I make it? I heard there were free copies of Conquests of Longbow given out here. Can you believe it? Totally free! It was worth waiting for this game for 17 years after all. Why buy games when you can get them free later, that's what my dear grandpa always used to say. On the other hand he was a mute so... Hmm, what? Oh, get in the line? Sorry. Hi, I'm Bob. It's not my real name, but I just can't help telling people that my name is Bob.

<waiting in line for his turn until called by cold lifeless voice saying "NEXT!">

This will take forever!

<later>

Excuse me, let me through! I'm having babies! Ugh, I apologize about the leg, my lady. Best if you'd see a doctor about that, loose fractions are no laughing matter. Excuse me, pregnant man coming through!

<stumbling into a big grunt>

Oh sorry. I didn't watch where I was going. I'm pregnant by the way, and ever since that accident my eye sight just hasn't been the same. What's your name? Oh I see, that's nice. Well, it was nice to meet you. What you say about going out for a coffee later? Anyway, must go.

<finally>

"Number?"

What?

"Your number, sir. You do have one, right?"

Oh yes, certainly. Yep. Erm... what kind of number are we exactly talking about?

"Look sir, I've been doing this for three days now and I would really appreciate it if you would do it without the lame jokes, fail and go home all miserable like all the rest of these pathetic entries."

LOL?

"What?"

Oh sorry, I read it upside down. I'm entry 707.

"707? Your turn was yesterday."

Just give me a chance. I promise I won't waste your time.

"Look, I'll give you 5 seconds. If you fail to impress me it's over. Is that clear?"

Understood. Erm... what I'm supposed to do?"

"Just grind your organ or something."

I don't know how.

"Look, your applying for a part in a porn movie. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know how to do that."

What? I thought this was were I apply for Conquests of Long... oh I see. Heh. It seems it was a misunderstanding on my part. Well, gotta run.

<flees>

"NEXT!"

Flyboy 01-09-2008 07:34 PM

Any other entries? I'm closing this on friday.

stepurhan 01-10-2008 01:18 PM

Have we any musicians interested in a free classic out there? We haven't got any audio entries in yet and it would be nice to hear something new, especially if it had an AG inspiration to it.
