Detalion closes its doors

News out of Poland is troubling for adventure fans, as longtime developer Detalion has closed its doors. Renowned for its puzzle-intensive offerings like Reah and the Mysterious Journey series, Detalion has also been one of the few progressive developers willing to push technology in the genre, using a real-time 3D game engine in its most recent games. Detalion's latest offering was Sentinel, released late in 2004.

Detalion had quietly laid off a significant portion of its staff several months ago, but continued to seek ways to resume operations until this latest move became necessary. According to Maciej Miasik, game producer and co-owner of Detalion, the company still officially exists for the time being, and could yet restart activities if they're successful in their ongoing attempts to secure funding. However, there are no current plans for development of another project, and the outlook is not hopeful.

It's a sad day when a developer with such a solid reputation for quality titles can't find publisher support, and serves as yet another reminder that business in a niche market is precarious, at best. Here's hoping that the talented team from Detalion won't be out of game development for long.
