Adventures with alternative solutions to puzzles

Hi, me again.

So, I want to make a list of puzzles in games which have alternative solutions, for a video. As many know, I like to document in video form “All x games” and other oddities.

Of course the first one would be the best videogame ever made, Indy FOA, which has 3 different paths as well as alternative solutions (like finding the lost dialogue depending on a random).

Legend of Kyrandia 3 has like I think 6 ways of escaping the first island, and I think the last part also has some branching but not really sure.

Maniac Mansion has lots of this, because of the characters combinations. I think the other LucasArts have no more branching.

I cant think of anymore unfortunately. It would be great if you help me fill this list up, with actual examples.

Thanks !

An ambitious project.  Cool

The Last Express has a few puzzles, or rather problems, which can be solved in more than one way. Such as getting rid of your friend Tyler’s body and hiding from the police.

Return to Mysterious Island with its unique inventory. Problems can be solved by various object combinations.

Good luck with that. There are quite a few games that have alternate solutions to at least some puzzles.

A few off the top of my head:

Return to Mysterious Island has lots (How did Karlok not think of that one? Tongue )
VOYAGE
The Secrets of Da Vinci (Basically, most of the early Kheops games.)
KQ1 (with some solutions worth fewer points)
All the QfG games (mostly based on your class/skills)
Heart of China
Conquests of Camelot / the Longbow have a few alternate, sub-optimal solutions
Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy (mostly at the start)
Many of the old text adventures (Zork, Colossal Cave…)

I did. I added it just one or two seconds before you posted.  Smile

Awesome, love this community.

Most adventure games are completely linear though, I discard the Deponia tetralogy for example.

How about the Access games ? Amazon guardians of eden has no alternates I think, not sure about Martian memorandum, tex murphy, etc

Zak McKracken and Loom also have alternative puzzles.
King’s Quest 6 is famous for its alternative path.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is the first that comes to my mind.

Resonance had alternative solutions for 3-4 situations.
The Cave offers a variety of different solutions.

Portal 1 and 2: every chamber can be completed in two or three ways.

Really ? Any examples on Zak McKracken ? Loom .. Im trying to remember alternates, but came out empty. Oh wait, the dragon, there were two ways to deal with her, but cant remember exactly the difference

The way you can make money, the way to reach things, the way to get into a bus and into a cave… There were plenty of those, Zak is a very open game.
As for Loom, the alternatives came from using different spells - the dragon puzzle, the sword puzzle, etc. Even the manual mentioned alternative solutions. Apparently it was a thing for LucasArts back then. I recall that Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was also chock-full of alternative solutions, especially in the castle level and afterwards.

of course Blade Runner, for example; many time when you miss a clue at the crime scene you can retrieve info about it at your Asper when scanning images of the scene
