The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
Having faced the Personal Nightmare depicted above, a Dark Obsession for adventure drives them to set sail for the The Island of Lost Hope and to the town of Anchorhead aboard a ship with Black Sails christened The Sea Phantom, whispering a prayer to the Maiden of the Moonlight to grant them safe passage there and then onward to The Black Sanctum of Cranston Manor; that Black House on the hill once known as The Abbey of Montglane, famous at one time for its Ceremony of Innocence, but which fell into ill repute after a series of disappearances that began when a man known only as The Count went Missing there One Dark Night under very suspicious circumstances.
Rumors of a Black Sect performing forbidden rites in the Crypt below The Abbey spread quickly and Fear amongst the local villagers that this Corruption of the faith would allow a Dark Seed to take root in The Darkness Within began to rise in their collective Imagination.
Sensing they were on Borrowed Time, it was decided after Dark Fall, at The 11th Hour, that, despite the Heavy Rain and the bad omen that The Shadow of the Comet would fall upon the earth this very night, something that happened only once every 42 years, they must act and pray that The Quest to rid their town of this evil wasn’t a Fool’s Errand.
So it was that they approached the Dark House near Midnight, breached its Portal, moved Beyond the Threshold and began their Uninvited descent to the Crypt of Medea below, thus named for that vengeful sorceress of Greek Myth.
When they reached the Catacombs the noises began; a series of Scratches that could be heard from within the walls. The villagers attributed it to The Rats which could occasionally be seen scurrying about, but upon entering a Dead End passage which terminated in a structure whose Façade was lined in Severed Heads, their Rippled Flesh coated in a dark, viscous Ooze, and whose centerpiece was an ebon trapezohedron made of Obsidian that seemed to absorb rather than reflect light, they knew that something far more sinister was afoot.
As they approached, The Dark Crystal throbbed with energy and begun pulsing in sync with other Jewels of Darkness about the room when rays of “shadow” suddenly burst forth from their surfaces in a Dark Convergence that engulfed the villagers. They were never seen again.
Today, the site of the former abbey is home to a place called The Institute, which is a Sanitarium where the mentally Afflicted seek to assuage their Inner Demons and that also offers much needed Asylum for the sick and the poor.
While children from The Village jokingly call it Maniac Mansion and tell scary tales of the resident Psycho Killer who fashions himself a modern day Jack the Ripper, those who know of The Dark Eye the place used to cast upon the village, of its Inherent Evil, are not so quick to discount the recent murmurings of strange occurrences taking place there once again and fear that its dark Legacy may haunt them yet again
It is to this place that our intrepid old adventurers travel at the behest of Whitman Day, a resident psychiatrist seeking help to unravel whatever is disrupting the Normality of the facility…
