King’s Quest licensing speculation

Now, I suppose this is a thread for Fables/The Wolf Among Us, so if you really must engage me more about this, you can email me or send me a PM at Infamous Quests.

Thanks, but I’ll pass. I think I already got my message across that it’s annoying and in bad taste to throw out rumors about other teams and then refuse to back them up.

That’s fine, but I’m always available if you need to talk about it.  Thanks for your lesson in etiquette.

I think we can move on. I think myself and blackthorne are right & wrong. The deal isn’t entirely dead. No more than Prey 2 is dead. (if you didn’t know, Prey 2 is in more of an eternal flux than completely dead)

Lets put this to rest and talk more about this new game. Grin

In time, all mysteries are revealed. Here’s more on the Telltale losing the KQ rights thing:

He had told me this some months back, but I didn’t think it was smart to publish. I still don’t, really, but now it’s out there.

There are other dimensions to this, too. Telltale apparently bought the rights to other Sierra series as well, and the deal fell through around a year ago. The license being in flux was what created the ambiguity that messed up the SpaceVenture press campaign, because they weren’t sure if they had adequately secured permission to use “Two Guys from Andromeda” from the right parties.

That game is at a serious roadblock, though, and I worry if Human Head will even survive. It’s probably in a worse situation than King’s Quest in a way, in that there are two parties who are not budging on their demands.

According to Trowe, Telltale is out of the King’s Quest picture.

“They had [the King’s Quest rights], and we were going to license it from them to make the remakes. I wouldn’t do a King’s Quest without Roberta. [Telltale senior VP of publishing] Steve Allison told me that they have the rights but they don’t have the bandwidth.” Allison offered to look into sub-licensing King’s Quest out to Replay, but Trowe hit a dead end when he brought the conversation over to Activision. ”I talked to the guys at Activision and they were like, ‘No, we’re pulling it [from Telltale] because we’re going to do it ourselves.’”

This is the first public mention of Activision’s plans for King’s Quest since the Telltale connection was first revealed in early 2011. We’ve reached out to Activision for comment and will update accordingly when we hear back. Think about the possibilities though. More Leisure Suit Larry, post-release content updates, a planned F2P casino game, and the possibility of an entirely new game from Roberta Williams. It’s like 1987 all over again. Trowe is just as much excited gamer as he is industry professional, but wouldn’t you be too?

I should mention that he told me a slightly different story as to why. He said it was because Telltale had gone so long without the game ever entering development that allowed Activision to take back the rights, and that they did so not so much because they wanted to make their own KQ, but because they didn’t want Telltale just sitting on the rights and sub-licensing them to people forever without actually making a game.

So I wouldn’t count on there being some AV King’s Quest or Space Quest, which is how he made it sound there.

It does seem to be over for Telltale then with King’s Quest, and thus Blackthorne is saved from giving away free copies of Quest for Infamy.

Exactly.  Telltale had until June of 2012 to put a King’s Quest game into production, or the rights would revert back to Activision.  Telltale failed to do so, and the rights reverted back.

I wish Replay would have had the opportunity to obtain the licenses. I love how their Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded is turning out.

I think Replay would have done a good job.  Don’t rule out the future; I just hope Activision doesn’t do their own thing with it, because it’ll suck.

It’s a tough spot. The only way they can raise that money is if LSL does really well, but if LSL does really well, it could drive up the price. Catch 22.

They’d need other people on board, too. Roberta sounds tentative, Scott and Mark aren’t interested, Jane is doing her own thing…

Catastrophe averted.  I just want to take this moment to do a small happy dance, and rub it in the faces of all of the Telltale sycophants.

*stands up and jigs, pelvic thrusts in sycophants’ direction*

Yeah, I hope Telltale doesn’t waste time with King’s Quest, I would be annoying to hear the whiners everyday in this forum.

I’d actually prefer Activision made KQ than Replay. I don’t need another 2D 1990 throwback. Activision with its size and money could bring something new to the genre, modern graphics, etc. I’m not saying it would definitely turn out well, but I’d rather see it try and fail than just see the same thing again. That would be in the true spirit of Sierra.
