AG Community Playthrough #35: Syberia 2

@Mikekelly I think - from what we know (“game facts”) - that Hans hasn’t been to Syberia, and that his ambition - since his youth - is to meet the mammoths (Why? Because he is so small. Bad joke, but his possible motives, if any, may be of interest). By now he may consider it as well as his final resting place (assumption). What Sokal has intended with the mammoth/Syberia theme/subject, stays unclear, or at least it can be interpreted in various ways (see also the comments in the previous CP).
We also know Hans is an old and frail man, and based upon our knowledge of the real world we may assume that he won’t live that long, though it also might be the case that he lives for another twenty years. We just don’t know. However, we are wandering around in a fantasy world (so real-world interpretations aren’t that relevant), and who knows what will happen if Hans meets the mammoths in that magical place. It’s all speculation. Perhaps the new game will supply us with some info (a clue like it was done with Helena Romanski). If I remember correctly, it stays unclear why Hans hasn’t reached Syberia yet in the past (after all he is as you say “a well travelled guy”).

More contrasting images:

The only plant inside the monastery, and it’s obviously not cared for properly. It’s dying, like the patient lying next to it.

A plant that’s growing despite the icy weather. It doesn’t need proper care, so it’s able to thrive.

Looking up into the cathedral’s (actually, the library’s) tower. Everything’s structured, measured, perfectly idealized.

Looking down into the town. It’s muddy and messy down there, with a train yard used as a junkyard, angular tracks, and people focused on everyday survival.

Part 3: Whiteout

Aren’t you glad we found some warmer clothes for Kate?

We have managed to get Hans back on his feet and made a daring escape from the monastery, but only to instead have the train hijacked and Hans and Oscar kidnapped!
Kate is in hot pursuit of the kidnappers, and now has to make her way in the great white wilderness of Siberia without the warm luxurious train, and only with the help of her new companion the Youki.

You have one week until Sunday evening the 6th of September (cet) to complete this part, and you should stop as soon as Kate has had a good nights sleep, and wake up in a bed.

Stop right after this scene.

Hint: When fishing it is a good idea to know something about fish.

P.S. Sorry I’m a bit later than planned today.

I find myself at the airplane. I recall this being a very difficult and very annoying part of the game.

Well, I can totally see that now - Hans has actually never been to Syberia - but based on all he has found out about this land - he wants to go there as his final resting place. To the rest of the world it is a myth - but to Hans it is reality.

Now our next stopping point - I believe that is the most interesting one I have ever seen!

I also reached the crash site of the plane of Boris Charov.

Few comments about what I played in this section so far, and sorry if some of this might sound like nitpicking. Overall, I am still enjoying the game a whole lot.

1- The fishing puzzle:Ok, I was confused about the color of the fish. It said in the book that the fish color should be green, but when I tried what looked to be a green bait, the orange salmon didn’t bite. When I tried the yellowish bait, I caught the orange salmon. I’m either color blind, or the color is off. Did anyone else encounter this?
2- Voice cast: Why do all the Russians sound British (the brothers Bourgoff and Boris Charov), whereas Emiliov Goupatchev has an English Russian accent. It feels very inconsistent. Also I remember Boris sounding more Russian in Syberia 1.
3- Pixel Hunting: Remember how I said the game does very good in tackling pixel hunting? Scrap that. I was stuck for an hour looking for wood to melt the fish, in the first few scenes. The thing is, I knew I needed wood, and the irony is that I am in the middle of a forest, yet the only place I can get dry wood is this very small area in one of the scenes. I hate it when the whole background is full with stuff that can be a solution, but I am stuck because of pixel hunting.

Anyway nitpicking aside, the game has some nice variety of puzzles, and it possesses this captivating natural beauty to it that is found in all the Benoit Sokal games I have played (except for Still Life I guess.) It just makes me wish I was in Kate’s shoes to experience this natural beauty. Big kudos to not having very long dialogue trees and getting straight to the point.

Some extra screenshots from Part 2:

The Monastery

That door entrance look an awful lot like something we saw in Valadilene in the first game!

Inside the church.

Our good friend the Patriarch welcoming Kate to the monastery.

Flashback to the first game - The detective is on Kate’s trail.

An eavesdropping monk.

The graveyard / Kate doing a bit of gardening.

The library - Perhaps the most beautiful place in this part of the game.

The journal.

There be Mammoths - I’m a bit surprised that no one has mentioned the silhouette of the Mammoths on the wall, it is imo perhaps the most important thing in this scene.

For whom the bell tolls ...

I’m sure that can be arranged Wink

The grate escape / Winter Olympics in bob-sleighing.

Flying bicycle scene from ET Wink

Looks like they are both surprised that they actually survived that stunt.

Just one last job before we leave.

The horses.

Kate smiling - not something we see often.

The great train robbery!

Newspaper announcing the death of Helena Romanski on the left, and the space flight of Boris Charov on the right, both characters we meet in the first game.
But it was probably the centre article about Mammoth ivory that the Bourgoff brothers were interested in.

The chase.

The sparks here are one of those small details that I love in this game.

A chase the continues through the night.

Until they finally catch up the next day - Poor Youki, it must be exhausted.

He he, when I decided to make the break point here I had actually completely forgotten that Kate would be undressed, it is just the most natural point to stop - That it also meant that I could post a nude picture (well almost) of her, is just a bonus Grin

I haven’t actually started this part myself yet, but I remember I had the same problem in my last playthrough. If I remember correctly,
the colour of the lure is actually green, but it is a very yellow-ish shade of green Meh, and with a more obviously green lure, I also spend a lot of time using the wrong one.
That is also one of the things that I love the most about all of Sokal’s games.
Walking through the beautiful scenery with lots of “empty” screens, without any hotspots, interactions or other purpose, except of course to simply let us enjoy the scenery, set the atmosphere for the game and give us a larger spatial (less claustrophobic) feel of the setting, than what is normal in adventure games.

I know this is not to everybody’s taste, and many prefer that every screen is packed with hotspots, and that you are taken directly to the next story or puzzle screen without having to spend time walking through empty screens, but I really love it, and it is what makes his games so special!

I’m also at the plane, doing a lot of back-and-forthing.

The forum software has just indicated that this isn’t an actual word. Well, it should be! Especially in an adventure gaming forum.

I was admiring the screenshots Izno posted and realized that the tall tower that I thought was part of a cathedral at the monastery was actually…a library. I saw the books, but the structure was elaborate enough that I assumed it was a cathedral-like building that was so large that we didn’t get in far enough to see the altar. The actual church with the wall frescoes I assumed was a side chapel.

Just goes to show how wrong my assumptions can be.

I wonder if there will be a gorgeous library in Syberia 3 to match or out-match the ones in Syberia 1 and 2?

I missed the hotspot for the wood and also the fishbone—but the environments and the story are making up for the frustration.

I’m admiring the detail in the last screenshot Izno posted—the train and the splotches of snow on the splintered wood of the bridge and the pine needles framed against the sky.

I don’t see the mammoth silhouette on the wall. Any hints as to where it is?

It doesn’t show very well at all in Izno’s screenshot Becky and checking on the 2 screenshots I took it doesn’t show at all well on either of those. But if you can replay that sequence you’ll notice on the wall to the left and above Hans a silhouette is seen rotating round in time to the light emanating from the Youkil ornament that contains the herbal candle. It’s actually very well done.

I arrived at the soft porn scene.

I really disliked the cockpit sequence. I halfway expected the instructions for the instruments be be hiding inside the Russian Doll. No such luck. I am guessing that the colors of the knobs and switches offered some clue as to what needed to be done, but if they did the clues were totally lost on me. Move stuff until something happens. Repeat.

The ejections seat sequence was exciting. But, unless you remembered graphing from school, which was a loooong time ago for me, you wouldn’t intuitively know the correct number sequence. Horizontal/Vertical.

I’m glad I remembered about the tower and shed from when I played before. Otherwise I wouldn’t have had a clue what to do. As it is, I got lost trying to find my way back to the wreck.

And then there is Igor! It seems to me that there was a lot of “padding” added to this sequence. Why couldn’t Kate inspect the snowmobile when she first saw it? That way she could have silenced the totem and eliminated the need for a bundle of useless conversation.

I’m sure there are others that will disagree, but I didn’t enjoy this section nearly as much as I did the first.

Aha! Thanks Timm. I see it now. I remembered the shadows as being much smaller—I must have mostly focused on the tiny mammoth cutouts in the candle while the animation was playing.

I didn’t notice it when I played the scene. And, when viewing the YouTube video, I’m not sure anything in those shadow images screams “Those be Mammoths!” either.

I have heard that Syberia 3 is going to 3D backgrounds so we’ll see if the game has the same charm as Syberia 1 and 2.

Hopefully, it will be the best in the series and answer some questions left behind from Syberia 2.
