Adventure Game Scene of the Day — Saturday 23 May 2015
Maps! Just what we need. We can make origami!
I’ve played children’s games that I found boring or simply too childish to finish, like Pagemaster or Voodoo Kid. Some were great fun, like Louis Cat Orze and this one: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Usually I can only take Jim Carrey in small doses, but I enjoyed the humor and silliness in this game a lot.
Unfortunately I can’t finish it. I played it on my old win98 machine and everything works fine, except for one impossible minigame. (Previous minigames were no problem.) It’s not me and my poor hand-eye coordination, I can only conclude that even a win98 machine was too fast for this 1996 game.
This is the part where I’m stuck. You have to keep the dolphin in the middle. Three seconds and fishie has disappeared, no matter how hard I try. I’m still hoping someone comes up with a saved game for me… Dag perhaps?

How about messing with the cycles setting in DosBox to slow it down?
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
It’s not a DOS game. Win 3.1 and win95.

There are numerous CPU killing programs too, but be careful with those (they look tricky to me since I’ve never used one).
I believe Ace Ventura (although coming from a company that made some of my most favo(u)rite games) is not worth the risk.
Dag perhaps?
Doug for sure, he’s nuts about them cartoony games (like yours truly, although I haven’t played many of those - especially not Ace Ventura).

Who is Doug?

The guy with Duckman as his avatar.
Oops, it’s Dag (not Doug).
Sorry Doug Dag.

There is an app called “CPUKiller”, which despite it’s name, will not kill your CPU but will slow down your old games. Fairly easy to use with some tinkering. You set it for one game at a time that you can then select from.
Three games it worked well for in Win Xp (perhaps along with DosBox - it’s been a while so I’ve forgotten):
Zork Grand Inquisitor
Black Dahlia
Azrael’s Tear
I found this game in a flea market the other week. It’s fun, but the interface is really clunky.
I had some trouble with the mini game that you’re stuck on too, Karlok. It turned out that the controls are inverted, so you need to press the right arrow key to move your point of view to the right (and thereby move the dolphin to the left). I also thought it was me being too slow at first.
From another thread:
I’m not up on the terminology, but what’s a “Zobraks”?
It’s an acronym for “zero operational but really absolutely keen system.”
Just kidding, it’s a terrorist organization dedicated to the liberation of the people of Malawi.
Excuse the streaking, I’m forced to do it until 26th of July.

WHAT?!? Thank you, I’m going to try it right now.

Streaking? Where, where, please show us?
EDIT: You’re right, Harald! It’s counterintuitive and still difficult for me, but doable. I did wonder why I could do other minigames and not this one…

Here, have a ball.

That’s not me, but you wanted to see some streaking so I supplied it.

Not you?? What a disappointment.
You said: Excuse the streaking, I’m forced to do it until 26th of July.
Liar liar pants on fire!
Or maybe you want me to explain the difference between streak and strike?
See you around, wolf. Nerissa
Hey, when I said “streaking” I didn’t mean literally. It’s just that this posting in threads that have nothing to do with what I’m saying (since I, due to my muleheaded stubborness, can’t post in the relevant thread) reminds me of streaking (or being adventurereresque ).
So, I’m streaking in a way.

Yeah, yeah… right, whatever you say…
That streaker is not YOU and that’s all that matters.
I’m devastated.
