2017/2018 Sierra roulette playthrough
Shy gypsy slyly spryly…?
Shy gypsy slyly spryly…?
That’s a 7th guest puzzle, right? Don’t know how that is but in here it’s guessing a 6 letter word using a pool of different letters for each one to form a word. I tried a couple within the context but to solve without the walkthrough would probably have to write the letters in a paper to see the possible combinations and I didn’t want to bother. After seeing the solution I was happy I didn’t do it…

I never finished The 7th Guest before my internet days. The soup cans are the main reason, iirc. That puzzle was impossible, even for native English speakers with a thesaurus.

Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
Yeah, we walkthroughed it shamelessly back then. Didn’t even know what some of the words mean after seeing a solution.

I can’t remember if I walkthrough-ed it (I probably did seeing as it was one of my first adventure games), but do you really think it was that hard? I would be interested to see how I would cope with something like that today. You don’t often find puzzles of that difficulty in newer games, and it’s the kind of puzzle I would stew over for days or weeks.
It was quite hard, especially if you’re not a native speaker. Not as annoying as those damnable cryptic crossword parts of The 11th Hour, but to solve it “fairly” you’d need such command of the English language to be able to recall words with a lot of “Y"s in them on demand and then do a major anagramming effort. The only “hook” you have into the puzzle is how many letters per word, but that’s really not enough. I’m not even sure the solution is unique, TBH.

what do mean by walkthroughed it back then. but there were no walkthroughs back then?..only hintbooks.
did you buy one you mean?

I just checked the walkthrough and you get another hint:
Hint from the game: Bashful nomad, craftily, agilely, meet secretly near my underground vault.
If you do the easier words first like shy and crypt, it’s not too difficult to narrow down the others. Well, not impossible anyway.

I was 13 at the time. I had a good grasp of the English language but nowhere near my current vocabulary, and no internet access. I’d still deem that cryptic word puzzle impossible under those circumstances.
Hehe, cryptic.

Good thing the game gave you the option to skip any puzzle you wanted, then.
Reading about the 7th guest puzzle I feel bad complaining about the Phantas2 puzzle, it’s not that hard, just missing a hint.
Chapter 2 is bringing on the gore. Viscera eating, eyeballs in mouth, stapling lips, fun stuff!
Finished Phantasmagoria 2, I think it might fall in the “so bad it’s fun” territory unlike the first one.
The game has only a handful of locations and characters and gameplay mostly consists of going around clicking on stuff to see next FMV scene. Puzzles are mostly figuring out some codes and only the one I mentioned before was hard, the later ones where a bit more obvious…
Yet it’s so cheesy it becomes funny at some points. The main character goes in a bondage trip for no real reason other to have scenes like these:
And despite the game not having that much gore (probably would need more budget…) it’s full of little snippets of random “shocking” moments that happen in the head of the main character.
The dialogues… some scenes made me wonder if it was some kind of porn movie
You know, it might be wrong in face of everything that just happened, right now, I just really need to feel you inside me. - real quote
The story at least is not interily predictable, it moves along fast and actually had a somewhat cool twist at the end. The last portion of the game plays differently with some actual inventory puzzles and a kind of contraption to figure out. Unfortunately the game was bugged and it kept crashing to desktop every time I tried some specific actions (don’t know if it was a death screen of something). Had to use a walkthrough to avoid the crash and complete the final steps…
Anyway, fun game if you like cheesy horror from the 90s that doesn’t overstay but does have the problems of most FMVs games.
Anyone interested in joining an informal playthrough of Colonel’s Bequest? To celebrate its release on GOG. I’m sure some of us haven’t yet played it, and others who wish to revisit.

YES! I’m already playing Experience 112 and watching AMFV on youtube, but a replay of the Colonel’s Bequest was next on my list. AMFV can wait.
