My preference for the second comes mostly from some characters and the cases that I thought were more interesting.
it does start a like the first one and since the release was so close it might feel repetitive.

The final trial has been going on for 163 hours. A bunch of annoying people keep cackling at each other about hope, despair and stuff. When they’re not doing that, they’re pulling “plot twists” I don’t give a fuck about out of their arses every 10 minutes. Also, a few particularly tedious action sequences every once in a while.

Plz send help. I just want it all to end.

It’a all about despair, even for the player!

I remember that the final trial did take a while and had a lot of talk about the despair and ultimate Despair. Maybe it’s a curse the second game having a too long final trial Like PW) Smile

WTF did I just play through???

I thought the first game’s final trial couldn’t be topped for tediousness, nonsensicality and pure awfulness—but boy was I wrong!

I have a vague, vague recollection that there was a very good game in the first five chapters, but it has mostly been obliterated by the abomination that was that last chapter.

Ugh. I feel numb. I don’t think my brain can even process that level of awfulness.

So I take it you are not a fan of the virtual reality twist? Smile

Oh, I was totally fine with that. Actually, it was my main theory for what was going on in the first game, and I was disappointed it turned out to be wrong then, so I was perfectly OK with it here. It wasn’t even much of a twist, since it had been hinted at since the beginning.

It was everything else that I hated.

I hate the Danganronpa mythology. It’s awful, it’s vague, it’s just a bunch of half-baked stuff about hope and despair that never seems to make any sense or to feel real. I wish it would go away; I wish the games were just the murder mysteries and the cute teddy bear. Unfortunately, the last chapter was ALL about the mythology.

And when I say ALL, I really mean ALL. There wasn’t even a mystery to solve. And so the trial was just people talking, and talking, and talking, with some random action sequence here and there to check that the player hasn’t fallen asleep. Ugh.

On top of that, Monokuma (the best thing in the game) got booted out to make room for the return of the revenge of Nutjob Cheerleader. Because clearly that was the one character that we all wanted to see again. Sick

And it felt like it would never end. It was just constant bickering between two factions nobody cares about, and meaningless plot twist after meaningless plot twist. I genuinely got afraid that it was going to go on and on and on and on and on and on forever, and that watching that was my life now.

“Hahahahaha! I win! This was all part of my devious plan!”
“No you don’t! You walked right into my trap!”
“Oooh! But you haven’t noticed that your puny trap was part of my super-duper bigger trap!”
“You fool! I knew you’d say that!”
“Press button A!”
“No, press button B!!”
“Press both!!!”
“Press neither!!!!!”

OH MY GOD, FUCK OFF, BOTH OF YOU!

And then, when the game has muddled the plot beyond recognition, it just solves everything through magic, by having Neo perform miracles both inside and outside the Matrix. And then the pink rabbit destroys the giant cheerleader to some sweet techno tune. Because, at this point, why the fuck not?

That trial was just so, so, so, so bad. I must have lost a million brain cells just sitting through it.

That was the gameplan actually.
That is Danganronpa.

Did you at least get any panties?

Nah, you’ve got a point. I love both these games but I’m not keen on how the second one ends. The twist pretty much makes all rules irrelevant because of the circumstances of the environment…

The whole is not greater than the sum of its parts but that chapter with you know who before the designers lose control of their story. How can you not love that even on a conceptual level?

I’m not sure what you’re referring to specifically, but the first 5 chapters were definitely very strong, with some good murder mysteries that were much more interesting (and much harder to figure out) than in the first game.

I was however a bit disappointed with the characters. It feels like they focussed so much on WhatsHisFace (the annoying guy who wouldn’t stop cackling about Hope™ and Despair™) that they forgot to give personalities to the rest. (Two memorable exceptions: the yakuza guy had a great arc; and Porno!Nurse was awful on more levels than I can count.)

LOL, I know a few games I felt like that.
In this one I actually don’t remember being that bad, just that the story went batshit crazy and the annoying Despair guy wouldn’t shut up.
I did think the cases and most of the characters were better than the first game. Also liked the final twist of the setting.

Expect more crazy in Dr3.
In mangas too, when series go further due to acclaim, authors make it more twisted and crazy for userbase. Deathnote lost it too later.
Dont expect tight narrative of 1st, even though much of Bear doll background was shrouded in mystery and seemed stupid.

Yeah, I was referring to him. He’s definitely designed to be annoying but his murder and the truth behind it is the biggest highlight of the series for me.
