Adventure Game Scene of the Day - Sunday, 22 November
A priest, a rabbi, and a penguin walk into a bar, and…
Do you ever go on a hiatus from the things you love, only to get back to it with even bigger flame? You know, taking a break from listening to Iron Maiden for a few months, stop watching crime TV shows for awhile after you’ve seen every possible Poirot episode and learned murderers by heart, leaving an internet forum… or adventure games?
Well, I know I installed Ankh when it was released after some fruitless period in 2005, and said - WOW! So that’s what Roberta Williams and the rest of the bunch tried to do when thinking of 3D in a “classic” adventure! Not everyone might be interested in its lighthearted take on Egypt, story, humor… but you can’t deny how Ankh brought an original idea when it comes to the graphics engine and the general concept, which was copycated not only by Deck13 in their other games, but also in the games like Ceville, or The Book of Unwritten Tales with a further enchanced look (the specific term is OGRE 3D engine). And it managed to look cartoony in 3D, it MANAGED to look 2D in 3D, and be free of action! An adventure gamer’s paradise!
Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale
So I’m not the only one who’s watched every possible Poirot episode?
This game was a surprise and a lot of fun. Assil is a classic anti-hero. Or maybe a classic semi-hero?
Anyway, he makes me laugh.
At least you have the new Poirot reboot to look forward
I was happy when the first Ankh game showed up digitally recently, I will finally play the trilogy one of these days
You love this game, don’t you Diego? You’re the only one that mentions it around here.
One day I’ll play it, I promise. I have a copy but it doesn’t seem to work on my PC.

Hehe… Advie likes it, too!
But yes - some of the ex-Lucas Arts people were involved in the making, and it shows. It’s not a perfect game, but it’s a nice little comical romp that has a classic adventure ingredients, and like I said, a typical 2D cartoon vibe to it.

Kenneth Branagh? Noooooooo!!!

Kenneth Branagh? Yay!!!
Kenneth Branagh looking like the pic above? Wait, what???
In any case, David Suchet set down the ultimate Poirot. That’ll be impossible to top.
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
I thought Ankh was a hoot & played the sequel too & was very disappointed when the 3rd took a while to appear (which I haven’t played) but funnily enough I enjoyed the games I got through but when I look at the screenshots I think aaaaagh!
