Edit: I just realised that in the Top 100 there is Infocom Text Adventures listed as one game. I suggest we split it up, because counting all of them in one vote is unfair on the other games. It would be like counting all Lucasarts or Sierra games at once, and if I were stuck on a desert island with ‘one game’ I would always cheat and pick the bundle.

Spider and Web

Anchorhead
Planetfall

Of course they should be counted as separate games, but unfortunately until now there weren’t any nominations for text adventures, thanks Oscar for mentioning them. I would like that we have at least few of them in the tournament.

Regarding the group stage, as it is currently winning the poll, I thought that when we divide games into groups everyone vote only once for each group by giving (for ex.) 7, 5, 3, 2 and 1 point to the games they prefer most in that group and at the end of voting the games with the most points (probably 4 of them) would advance to the knock-out round.

I would like to ask moderators (TimovieMan? Smile ) what would be the best way to organize this into threads in a way that will not clog the forums with multiple parallel threads?
My idea is that we have a separate topic for each group, but that at the same time only 2 or 3 of them be active. For example on day 1, thread for group A is opened, then on day 3 we open the thread for group B and finally on day 6 group C topic is opened and they lock the group A thread and so on… If it’s too complicated any other solution is welcome, this was just an idea.

If we use the Top 100 as a starting point for this Tournament, shouldn’t we also take the recent AGGIE award winners (both the critic and user vote winners would be my preference) also one of the 128 fixed positions?

I’d propose to take the ones since 2011, which is exactly the year the Top 100 was compiled.

I know this leaves less choices for this running vote to get 29 additional games, but I guess that makes only sense as the AGGIE winners were at least polled by a fairly large number of users or came out as winners from the AG writing staff.

I wanted to add votes for text adventures:

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Colossal Cave Adventure
Zork

@subbi Yes, that’s a reasonable proposition, especially since it seems that all of these games would nevertheless finish with enough votes to qualify, but this way we also acknowledge the value of AGGIE awards. And since it seems we would have a group stage, a number of 128 is no more written in stone (though it’s still preferable), but if there are 1-2 games that would be left out and have the same number of votes at the end of voting, there would be no problem to include them and just have 2 groups with one more game each, but I think it won’t come to that.

For 2011. both Portal 2 and The Book of Unwritten Tales are already on the list.

2012.

Critics: The Walking Dead

Users: The Walking Dead

2013.

Didn’t most of those already get voted for anyway? Wink

Also, I forgot to vote for Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations, and Phantasmagoria.

Well, for now Brothers have 3 votes and Walking Dead two, so if they stay like that, they are receiving wild cards Smile

Indeed, the Walking Dead was in grave danger of not making the cut. See what I did there? Laughing

But I guess it is fair that TWD gets selected given it won both the critic and user vote back in 2012.

[EDIT: This post has been messed up by Subbi.]

He he Smile in short here should be written that I’m voting for Alone in the Dark 1&2 and Space Quest 5. And that we have 3 new additions to the list:

Deponia, Night of the Rabbit  and The Whispered World.

Oh dang….I accidently edited Bogi’s post above rather than quoting it….. Smile
One of the perks of being a Mod, but is there anyway of correcting/undoing it?

My apologies Bogi, I didn’t mean to screw up your post.

(LOL, almost did the same with your post just now. Good tip: always look for the [ quote] tags Wink)

As soon as you see you fouled up, hit backspace twice (i.e. go back two pages in your history), copy the original text, and re-edit it to paste it back in. Wink

I’m happy to add my vote to The Walking Dead and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons to help secure their place beyond just the Aggie Awards rationale. Both are good games that warrant a spot.

I’ll also add some votes to…

King’s Quest 3
Space Quest 5
The Dagger of Amon Ra
Journey
Broken Age Part 1 (I hesitated to nominate this as it’s incomplete, but so is Kentucky Route Zero which is already in)

And I’ll nominate…
Photopia

Still making up my mind about others.

I’d love to see some text adventures get in, but I’m sorry to say I haven’t played most of the noteworthy ones (aside from Photopia) so I am not much help. I grew up with Scott Adams’ Spider-Man and various freeware ones but I don’t think those are good enough to warrant nominating. I’ve played a little of Zork 1 and A Mind Forever Voyaging but not enough to get a proper sense of them. I feel like I would be nominating them for token reasons, so I won’t. Hopefully some folks with more of the noteworthy text adventures under their belt can help move the best ones forward.
