I really hope somebody can help me!

Today I tried to reinstall GK2 - The Beast Within, but for som ereason my pc won't let me :frown:

I put the disk into the drive and I get the option to install, but when I click on install, I get the following message =

16 bit windows subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS +Microsoft Windows applications.
Choose "close" to terminate the application.

I really don't know what the problem is - system restore doesn't work, and the only programs I have installed and used recently are "Spybot Search and Destroy", "AdAware 6.0", and "RegCleaner"

I installed these programs in good faith from a PC Zone cover disk and used them to get rid of a lot of shit that was clogging up my pc.

I even used system restore to return my computer to a point where I had GK2 installed, but still no change :D

What's going on?
Any help would be much appreciated :D

Let me guess... you installed SP2 at some point since the last time you installed GK2?

Look here. (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showthread.php?t=6371)

(Why do we have stickies if no one reads them? :P)

:D :D Maybe that is the problem, but I am pretty sure that one of the restoration points I tried was pre-SP2?

Anyway, the link you provided gave some more options which I will try.
Hopefully one of these options will correct the problem :D

Could be, but System Restore doesn't uninstall SP2. ;)

Did you look at the link I posted before?

SP2 strips out a few things from the OS that this game (and others) require to install. You can either restore those few things from your original XP disk, or install a patch Packard Bell put out to solve the problem. It's all explained in the sticky post.

My point was just that even though you restored your machine to a point before you installed SP2, doing that didn't put the things back onto the machine that SP2 took out. System restore doesn't reverse the installation of a service pack.

That seems pretty dumb to me - I mean, what's the point of System Restore if it doesn't restore previous serious system settings?
I would have thought that the installation of SP2 was a serious system change!

Anyway, i have looked at the link you provided and hopefully some of those options might help.
For some reason XP came pre-installed on my PC so I don't have the original disks, but hopefully I'll be able to download the patch to correct this problem :D

Microsoft wants people to use SP2. That's why they make it nearly impossible to get rid of once you have it.

And it's why I still haven't installed it. ;)

Glad you got GK2 working. Don't worry about missing the sticky. I was in a pissy mood when I responded this afternoon. :pan:

Don't forget to patch the game, Mansie. You might also want to install the Interlace patch written by Hendroz available here:

http://www.gabrielknight2k.tk/

There are other GK goodies at his site.

Good idea. The patch is here (ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/pc/patches/gk2pat.exe). You should patch the game before you start playing because it makes saves unusable. It fixes an error in chapter 3 or 4.

Thanks for that guys :D
I'm pretty sure I installed the patch the last time I played GK2 but I've put so much crap onto my pc since then that I've lost track of what's been installed
