View Full Version : There's really nothing there to play

Last game I played and liked was The Black Mirror. BS3 was ok too. Syberia II was boring, did not finish it. Now I'm in the mood for a good game, but there's really nothing worth playing. Tried Still Life - boring, a Ripper game again? - give me a break. Looked at the strategy and RPG games too - nothing interesting and I don't like action games. There's really no choice, all the games are the same, and there's nothing I would like, probably because I'm not a teenager. Call it mcdonaldization of the game instustry.

You're a right little ray of sunshine, aren't you, javabean? ;)
Anyway, welcome to the AG Forum.

First, if you want something different why not try "Grim Fandango"? It's different from other adventure games on many levels.

Second, you have got to introduce yourself to omloflump and SamNMax. I think you'll find you have much in common with both of those guys.

There's all kinds of "underground" adventure games you can give a whirl. And they're free, so if it turns out they're lousy, you can save yourself the trouble of having to drive to the bridge to go jump off of it, because you won't be depressed at having spent money on crap.

It would help if you told us specifically what you'd like, and we could suggest things.

Grim fandango is different on many levels? Hmmm... mind clarifying that? I'd always thought that all adventure games are different! :D

Also, you really need to buy and play the Excellent Game Psychonauts. Buy it now, or Goggelor will crush your town.

Huh? Oh, you heard that, did you? It always takes me by surprise when people actually listen to me. ;)
"Grim Fandango" certainly has a graphic style all it's own, and it's storyline isn't like any other adventure game I've heard of. Javabean said s/he wanted something different, and while I agree with you that all adventure games are different one from another, "Grim Fandango" seems to be one of the most different of all.

:D It's definitely different. For one thing it doesn't have the "poke-pencil-through-keyhole-to-push-key-out-onto-newspaper-below" puzzle.

Just downloaded it, so far I like it, soundtrack by Angelo Badalamenti, that's cool, I just did not figure out how to play/the controls yet :)

I played these games and all the others way back to Larry 1, when they were originally released. Thanks anyway

I didn't read that part, and/or I skipped over it. Seems javabean's post and Syberia 2 have something in common.

Whenever you see an icon you need to reproduce the movement of the red dot to perform the required action. For example, if the dot is moving up and down you move your mouse and up and down (or your gamepad stick).

Thanks, I did not mean to ask for suggestions actually, because I know there's nothing new worth playing at the moment, I had some hopes for Still Life, but <see the orginal post>

Yar, but since when did an adventure game not possess a graphic style of it's own? There are plenty of Myst clones abound, yet every single one has a different graphic style ain't it? Even sequels, like Syberia and Syberia II, has different graphic style when you really think abou it.

I don't refute your recommendation on Grim Fandango. It's such a nice game for me that I'd already replayed it three times from scratch. Just that I'm totally amazed whenever someone say something is different from the rest, when every single thing is a unique identity. And to say that something is more different, is just like Orwell's "Animal Farm".

Sometimes too much of a good thing will still seems boring. Our perspective changes with everyday experience and interactions. So, my advice is, if you're genuinely bored with playing a game, take a break from it, and do something else, like read a book or even watch a few movie. Come back to gaming when you feel like it.

I don't know how relevent it is to you, but whenever I'm bored with a new game (I'd got so bored with Battlefield 2 that I'd sold it off last week!), I would just find some of my older adventure games, install it and play it. Playing old games sometimes are much more fun than playing newer games, for it brings with it a nostalgic value. Furthermore, some of the story or humour which may not be so relevent to you when you first played it (either because you're not old enough when it first came out, or that the world didn't move as fast then), may pick up a different meaning the next time you play it. I'd played TLJ four times already, and every single time it got me thinking about one or two aspects of life. It's really amazing!

Hey! Which game has that puzzle huh? I don't think I'd ever come across that, other than the spoof scene of "Jurassic Park" in either "The Critic" or "The Simpsons". I really love those cheesy, yet logical puzzles. More so than all those graphic marvel that has hotspots so ingeniously blend into the background that one got so dizzy after just looking around a few rooms.

Ouch! Yes, I was imitating the sheep. I've never actually played "Grim Fandango", but so many people here are transported into paroxysms of delight at the very mention of it's name, and I've heard so many people describe it's every nuance in excruciating detail, I figured it was a safe bet as a recommendation. Mea Culpa.
Ooh, I hate it when I get busted!

You should play it. It's great fun! It's different as you'd rightly said it. To me though, it's unique, just like everything else!

*hangs head* Yes, Mr. Homoludens. We're sorry. :frown:

So javabean, have you played "Morpheus" yet? It's kind of Myst-like (first-person, you can't die), but it's not a Myst clone.

Thanks! That's one game that I'd yet to try. Maybe I should start securing a copy soon. ;)
