View Full Version : Grim Fandango keeps crashing

Hello all, new member here.

Trying to run Grim Fandango with windows XP, but the game crashes about once every half hour. I tried a bunch of suggestions from the other threads (the ones I understood, I'm not very good at tinkering with computers), but it hasn't really helped any.

I figured I'd just play the damn game anyway and just remember to save after I accomplished anything, and that worked for a while. But then the damn game decided to corrupt about half of my saves, so that there's now a fair chance that the game will crash when I try to load a save file, weeeee!

Well, I'm pretty hardcore :shifty: and could probably live with this as well, if it wasn't for the fact that the game acts really weird whenever I try out any menus. Whenever I enter any menu and press up or down, the "cursor" starts moving by its own, from down to up in a steady pace. Makes saving and loading much more of a hassle than it should be, especially since I need to save so often.

Anyhow, I was actually able to suffer through this too (yeah, I reall like this game :) ), but now - on my latest uncorrupted save, Manny has decided to check some unseen "always walk" box, so now he keeps walking whenever I don't touch my gamepad :frusty: :frusty: .

This is too much, even for a patient guy like myself.

Anyone got any ideas?

PS. I have SP2 installed.

I had the same problem with the menus - I just avoided them.

First thing - have you got the patch installed?

Second, the game can and should be run without compatibility mode on. I played around with things for a while trying to resolve the sound corruption issue (which I found was with HT enabled and found how to correct that). I got more crashes when it was enabled than I did when playing it.

Otherwise it's the usual thing - make sure you have up to date drivers and up to date DirectX. Hope something works out - it is a great game!

Andy.

Hmm... it might be my video card drivers, never did get around to updating those, the ones I use are probably a few years old now. I'll try that

Patch is installed

Updated the video drivers (at least i think I did...like I said, not too good with computers). Latest save is still corrupted, but after playing for a while with the second last save, the auto-walk thing suddenly stopped. Played for 20 minutes or so on that save without crashes, we'll se how it goes. I'm not holding my breath though, not until I get at least one hour of crash free play in one go (high expectations here!)

If this doestn't work, I might try that other thing you suggested. No idea how to do it, but I'll be back here if it starts crashing again.

IT'S ALIVE!

IT'S ALIVE!

Finally seems to be in order now. Played for well over an hour without any crashes. The video drivers probably did the trick, thanks man!

....but I'm still playing on three save files, each one in triplicates, paranoia doesn't wear off quickly....
