I'm bringing this thread back from the temporary forum where it started.
We're running an article on Sanitarium today, and seeing the box art reminded me again how good it is:

That is nice, and the game is excellent, if a little disturbing.
As I said on the temp forum, my favourite box art is Grim Fandango, closely followed by Morrowind.

I personally think the Grim Fandango box art didn't work very well. I'm already not a fan of "character ensemble collages", and I think Grim Fandango even does it badly. It's like they randomly stuck pictures of the characters, and a screenshot of Rubacava on the box in a composition that's ... well ... tolerable. I understand the angle they were going for (old movie poster) but I think it could've been executed a lot better.
I really like the text blurbs though (e.g. an EPIC tale of CRIME and CORRUPTION).

I really like the GK1 and GK2 boxarts. They are very nice.

My favorite art box has to be The Longest Journey. I have it over my monitor so that I remember all the time that it is the very best game ever...*memories* ;(

same feelings here. I found them disturbing some way. I like covers that have a soul in them. A "character ensemble collages" as you said, is only cut and paste...
I understand the angle they were going for (old movie poster) em..not thought of it like that... :shifty: maybe i should reconsider a little for Grim :D
To see a goddie cover for Grim, you should check out the novel cover. Splentid...with atmosphere and the main chars drawed in a quite strange way...
seen it ever?
...*memories*
*whispers to Tyler ear* Longest Journey 2 is coming...

This is going back aways, but does anyone remember Infocom's "Cutthroats" where you play a deep sea diver? The box features a close-up of a diver underwater. In one hand he holds a broken oxygen tube, and air bubbles are bursting out of it. Through the diver's mask you can see a look of pure, unadulterated terror.

So simple, but so effective. I was around 11 years old and it freaked the hell out of me. I could see the desperation in that poor guy's eyes.

I really like the box art of Runaway and Gabriel Knight 3:blood of the sacred, blood of the damned.

Gabriel Knight 3 box is quite good. Gabriel is on (a beautiful female) angel-vampire hands, shirtless and with the medallion on his chest. And the title "Blood of the sacred, blood of the damned" meaning Gabriel(and the generation of Jesus) and "damned" the so called-vampires
it made a wonderful box...

The Longest Journey of course ;) And The Last Express. yeah I know the train is boring but when you turn over that flip-page thingy (no idea what's it called), it was like "Wow, nice!" to me. :) Syberia has a nice boxart too. Simple. But nice.

I think the Runaway box-art is pretty neat. Especially with Gina and those handcuffs :9~
But seriously, it has got a movie-like appearance which I like.
(My first post by the way, been reading these boards for years now).

Good for you ^__^
My favourite boxart would be those of the Warcraft 2 (+ expansion) and Diablo series. Very direct, very personal. Let's see if I can find examples.
Okay, I couldn't find any so quickly, but suffice it to say they're nice.

You can't go wrong with the original MI1 cover (http://www.scummbar.com/games/media/mi12/m1.jpg). TLJ's cover looks excellent also.

As RemiO said, Monkey Island 1 has a great box! I also love the boxes of Monkey Island 2, Indy FOA, and Sam and Max. Generally, I love the hand-drawn LucasArts boxes.

Yes, Lucasarts has had a talent in making game boxes look great.
My fav is Monkey Island 1.
I also find the old Zak McKraken box art to be very good.
i didn't realize until recently that the GK3 box art is also a take-off on christian art of the virgin mary holding jesus after the crucifixion. (gabe is jesus, the vampire is mary...)

edited for spelling -- also to add i didn't actually realize it on my own. someone else pointed it out to me. so much for all those years of Sunday School...

Various LucasArts titles (such as MI1 and DOTT), The Last Express, and Gabriel Knight 3 pop in my mind, though I don't have my collection with me so I can't browse through them and pick out my favorites.
As for non-adventure titles, I love the box art for Outlaws.

I must add the box-art from Stupid Invaders. The one where they are escaping the exploding planet. Simple but effective.
Probably more worth than the game itself, and that says a lot.

Oooh, I so agree. Blizzard has got it DOWN when it comes to graphic design and art direction. Their products are always bold, colourful, and theatrical. I keep all of my Blizzard boxes just like I kept my old Sierra and LucasArts boxes. Game boxes are an art!
Some random boxes I just adore:
Maniac Mansion (original box)
Zak McKracken
Monkey Island 1 & 2
Loom
King's Quest IV
Codename : ICEMAN (the original foiled print)
Conquests of Camelot
Warcraft 3 : Collector's Edition
Quake 3 tin box
Space Quest 3

FULL THROTTLE
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (just got a poster of this for my dorm room)
MI2 (the little voodoo doll is the touch that makes that cover awesome, IMO)
Grim Fandango
Loom
Diablo, D2, D2:LOD
The Last Express
Syberia (I'm not really sure why, I just like it)

Hmm! there are many good but Monkey 1 is the best followed by Monkey2, GK2, and BS1

I liked the box art of the original edition of The Last Express (not the reissue)

The one that really sticks out in my mind was the cover from Tex Murphy: Overseer. Not so much because of the art, but because it had a flashing red LED embedding in the cover. Kind of a neat gimmick.

I like the box art for The Longest Journey, Grim Fandango, and Post Mortem but my favourite would be the box for Gabriel Knight III: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned. :)
