So, I wanted to play some of my ancient games, and Toonstruck was one my favourites. I had a feeling it wouldn't work properly under XP, but even with all the compatability modes, it does nothing. The configuring video setup doesn't work because I don't have a 'super VGA chip'.
Is there any tried and tested way of getting Toonstruck to work under XP? I'm worried that DOS emulators like DOSbox will be far too slow.
Welcome to the forum. *D
People have had a lot of trouble getting Toonstruck running on XP, but apparently it can be done using DosBox. You may have decreased functionality though. Look at this thread (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showthread.php?t=7095) and this thread (http://forums.adventuregamers.com/showthread.php?t=4244). You may also turn up additonal info if you do a search of "Toonstruck" in this forum.

I'm currently replaying it under XP via DosBox. It's a bit choppy, but fine. :) Just don't forget to hit Alt+F12 to increase CPU cycles. A 486 DX2/66 was needed to play Toonstruck back then, and DosBox runs at 386 speed or slower if you don't increase the cycles. At least on my machine (XP 2200+).

Hey I have browsed this forum in and out looking for those problems to old adventure games constantly and you guys have tended to help out so I would like to thank you for that. Also I would hope to repay you by showing you this awesome link I found. The problem everyone (including me) was having with toonstruck was that it wasnt running well with xp well I was browsing and found this page. takes some time to set up but hope it helps. So far its the best Visual and Audio I can get on an XP version of windows.

That is using the XP DOS emulator, NTVDM, which is highly flawed. Also, it forcing you use a slowdown utility for timer bugs. Slowdown utilities are of limited use on modern PCs. It is also requires the use of NOLFB and Visual Fox Pro ODBC Installer. A lot of hoops to go through for a flawed experience. DOSBox is much easier and you don't have to put up with compatibility or speed bugs.
Remember that NTVDM is missing from some versions of Windows and will be eliminated all together in future versions of Windows. Get used to DOSBox, it is a classic gamer's best tool. Even though DOSBox is very easy to use, there are frontends that make it even easier.

I tried to use dosbox for Toonstruck under windows xp. I ran it on an athlon 64 3700 and it was choppy. So, I decided to find the best compatible hardware for running w98 and w95 games. I assembled it together and was able to get almost any older game to run smoothly on my duel boot system (98 and xp). Maybe this post is useless now that there are more powerful processors out there to run dosbox-maybe not. Now I have 3 computers of older components that run almost any old adventure game I throw at them. One of the hardest to get to run is Toonstruck, but I had zero problems. Another hard games was Texas Murphy: Under a Killing Moon and its predecessor. No problem for most games. Anyone else try this route or is dosbox the best solution now that the newest Intel chips are out?
