View Full Version : Good, but less-known adventure games
Let this be a thread where every adventurer shall look when he/she is looking for an adventure game to buy/download. And since all of us know about MI and KQ, let it be a list of less-known, but still damn good games.
My entries:
Igor: Objective Uikokahonia
Shadow of the comet
Conquests of the longbow
Gold Rush
Big red adventure
Willy Beamish
Touche: the adventures of the fifth musketeer
Add more games to the list, for I am searching for one to play.

I say, Out of Order not many have played it but it is really cool. If my memory doesn't fail me there was a thread in the old forum abouti and a review by MysterD. By the way, the ending was extremely cool.
You must play it despite the fact that it is 2D.

Often not regarded as an adventure, due to the inclusion of combat, but a genre-mixing classic - Outcast.

-Apprentice. It's the game of the month at AGSforums.com (http://www.agsforums.com/games.php). If you can't download it, visit the Apprentice web site and try again from there.
It's the story of a wizard apprentice who hasto find ingredients in order to make his first spell. Part one of a 3-4 part series. Excellent humour, interesting characters and nice music. Also impressive graphically.
-Cubert Badbone (http://cubert.deirdrakiai.com). A classic.

Omnikron [The Nomad Soul for Europeans] - of course! A fantastic game, and anything with David Bowie, who I'll be seeing on 22nd November {YEAH BABY!}, is good in my book.
A recent game that I enjoyed, that I don't think is very well-known or widely available (I had to download a copy myself as I couldn't find it for sale anywhere, even online...) is Tony Tough. It had nice graphics, a nice plot and some clever puzzles. Only the slightly iffy translation (I think it was made in Italy) let it down, at times.

Feeble files!
I loved that game, even though it was let down horribly by unfair puzzles and a slooowww walking main character. The atmosphere, characters and dialog were fantastic. The "I Love the Omnibrain" show still kills me.

Guys, I meant good old less-known adventures, not freeware ones. Anyway, the suggestions till now are really good. AGA, I bought TT online.

Gold Rush was really good, and I never actually heard of it until I saw it on the net a year or two ago.

Here are some of my fav. oldie classics:
- Lure of the Temptress
- Amazon Queen (this game was awesome when it first came out, and funny too)
- Noctropolis (one game that is often missed by the adventure gamers; the concept of the game is brilliant and it has some mature content i.e. nudity in there too. The bloopers in the end of the game were funny)
- Ripper (this incredible 1st person adventure starring Cristopher Walken, Karen Allen, and heaps of others. very violent game with incredible amount of swearing. not really an oldie but its aged over 7 or so years, so in my rating its definitely an oldie, and probably a classic of the b-grade fmv adventures)
- 7th Gues/11th Hour (lets not forget these groundbreaking classics)
- Neuromancer (based on the cyberpunk nover by William Gobson)
- The Dame Was Loaded (at one time this fmv adventure was my favourite - a typical private eye noir film with hot dames and funny 40's accents; buggy as hell though, but still a classic in my mind)
- Ark of Time (in a true spirit of broken sword meets indiana jones)
- Dog Day
- The Dig (i remember playing this game for hours, such an incredible game, with emotional ending)
- Beneath A Steel Sky (one of my all time favourites. Probably has the best background storyline out of all adventure games ever made)
- Teenagent (i think someone mentioned this, still this is a great game that is now a freeware and is available from a fantastic Polish company Metropolis Software House that also made Prince & The Coward, and Archangel)
.....
There are heaps more, I'm sure they will come to me

I don't see why Sierra would stop Gold Rush from being released as abandonware. If they want to offer the game to be downloaded for a price, I can understand that. But they're stopping people from playing the game, and offering no other legal way to purchase it directly from them.

this is one of the things that has made fans of the "old sierra" so bitter toward their new management. they don't make the games available for purchase (prolly because they'd have to support them), but they're also not willing to let go of the copyrights. their lawyers do actively send out cease-and-desist letters to abandonware sites. but, many sierra games are easy to find on ebay.

Here is my list of lesser-know but still enjoyable games:
* Black Dahlia - I think this the only game ever published that came on 8 fully packed CDs!! When people say they don't like FMV-adventures, most of them probably never heard of this littel gem. The game had professional acting, a movielike story and a good playing length. The riddles could get a bit too hard at times, but in this case we can always rely on our spoilers... Highly recommended
* Omikron: The Nomad Soul - This game did what the story promised: it really sucked me totally into the world. This game has David Bowie, action, adventure. When the game was released the graphics were marvelous and the whole game quite innovative. Some thought it was overloaded and not well balanced, I could never see that and enjoyed the whole game. I am still hoping we will live to see the day Quantic Dreams will finally be able to publish their longly announced game fahrenheit.
* Gene Machine - The strong British accent mixed with sarcasm made this game a pleasure for me
* all 3 Discworld adventures - The world on a disc... At least I think they are not broadly known
* Little Big Adventure I+II - very enjoyable games
* Mystery of Druids - nice atmosphere, story and length
* Riddle of Master Lu - good riddles, good length
* Sherlock Holmes I+II: good classic adventures
* Prisoner of Ice: good lovecraft story, good atmosphere
* Shadow of The Comet - never got to finish this one, but the atmophere was quite good
* Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist - funniest Sierra game of good length
* Igor: Objective Uikokahonia - nice classic game
* Jack Orlando - really catched themes, game is allright
* Ripper - I enjoyed the title theme and the overall game, too
----------------------
Second league, but still worth a shot:
* Teen Agent - funny, graphics dated but good humor
* Duckman: The Legend of The Fall - dirty humor, never really been published broadly, so it's hard to get
* Pleurghburg: Dark Ages - really good amateur adventure, graphics is bad but the story is good and long
* Hopkins FBI - good title theme, ok game
* Eye of the Kraken - funny, not quite professional but good game
* ...and of course all magnetic scroll games - thats where my adventure career began (the pawn)
Tyler Durden

* Mystery of Druids - nice atmosphere, story and length
Good game? It is. Less-known? I don't think so! Almost everybody knows it :shifty:

Neverhood? Unknown??
Well here are some VERY unknown adventures...
The Fish Files: The best adventure on the Game Boy Color, reminds me of The Day Of The Tentacle...
Genesys: A adventure/edutainment hybrid, kinda like an interactive documentary...
Hamtaro: You may know Hamtaro, you may know the game, but did you know its an adventure?
BTW: Neverhood had two sequels, Skullmonkey a plataform game and....

Skullmonkey happend right after Neverhood, the bad guy (Krull? cant remember) escapes to the monkey planet and becomes the king, and Klaymen goes to stop him...
As for the air hockey game it has all the Neverhood characters, but since I don't know the plot I can't say it has anything to do with Neverhood...

Well Skullmonkeys is a nice plataformer, the only one made entirely in clay!
I specially love the music its like the Neverhood but better! The bonus stage song is hilarious!
The Air Hockey Game is called Klaymen Gun Hockey...
Apparently Neverhood was very popular in Japan, they released The Neverhood on Playstation there and called it KlayMen Klaymen, and Skullmonkeys was Klaymen Klaymen 2, Klaymen Gun Hockey was not made by the Neverhood but it had Neverhood characters in it (Klaymen, Willie, Klogg), and was only released in Japan... So I don't know it its good...

I don't actually know what 'caustic' means, but I'm guessing that I'm always this caustic. But I don't mean anything by it. I sort of made it my goal to get people to take themselves less seriously by starting with taking me less seriously. Back 2 the topick: TeenAgent,
What about it? Apart from being a classic and cult adventure game here in Poland :9
Oh. One question: you consider TeenAgent to be a full-retail or shareware? I mean now it's freeware but at the tine of it's release few years ago?

Well, the topic is , as far as I know Good, but less-known adventure games. I consider TeenAgent 2 b good but less known adventure game. Exept in Poland, may b. :)
It brings another question: less known where?
I think that because thise game was sold in the beginning, it isn't fully shareware. Or something like that.

I would just like to point out that I would never do such things to innocent women myself
Ah, but the true psychos think no woman is innocent, Erwin. No loopholes for you. ;)
As for the topic, gotta go with Feeble Files here. A flawed game, to be sure, but one of the most finely-crafted adventures I've ever played. It might be more popular in Europe, but it's a shame it never found a North American publisher.

How about Starship Titanic? Its a Douglas Adams game with lots of Monty Phython members in it!

That's entirely true, Singer, but neither is any man :)

No argument here, Tamara!! :D The possibility of an innocent guy is so laughable, it hadn't even occurred to me.
Of course, I was merely speaking hypothetically, on behalf of psychos the world over - not that I... umm... uh... right, shutting up now.

This was a great concept with some excellent ideas, unfortunately spoiled by awful execution. :(

There was some hot discussion here long time ago about our (polish) developers being simply inept at game making craft. One of the arguments against this thesis was actually worlwide acclaim of Teenagent. It was already a cult here in Poland. However one of interlocutors mentioned that Teenagent was treated as a shareware and it was judged outside Poland by that measure.
Now, I don't know what he really meant by "it was treated like shareware".
edit: Our guilt,our blame ,
I've been far too sympathetic.
Our blood, our fault.
I've been far too sympathetic.
I am not innocent.
You are not innocent.
Noone is innocent.
I will no longer tolerate you
Even if I must go down beside you.
Because,
Noone is innocent.

This game is one of my top favorites. :)

It's called "Out of this World" in the US, and "Another World" in Europe/Australia, and is not talked about as much as it deserves. It's a graphical adventure with action elements. It has really great music/art direction. The only downside, if any, is that it's bit hard to finish though (without cheating), cause its a big game. It has that fantasy/real story atmosphere which I enjoyed much.
Check out the screenshots.

It was more of a Action/Platformer imo; but a good game none the less.. The plot was rather good in Another World. Delphines pure adventures (Cruise For A Corpse, Operation Stealth and Future Wars) had equally good (but different) plots, but were more pure adventures. All of Delphines games are worth checking out (Fade to Black and Flashback are also quite good; more in the vain of Another world than Cruise for a Corpse though)

Way of the Samurai. This one's on the consoles (ps2). It does involve combat, but it certainly has adventure elements. It's very open-ended, and you're able to make many decisions throughout the course of the game that truly have impact on how things play out.
Examples:
In the beginning, you see a yakuza thug chasing after a female. You can choose to stand back and let her get captured, you can interfere and save the young woman, or you can ask the thug if you could possibly join him.
Should you help the girl, she'll invite you to have a meal at her restaurant. When you arrive, a greedy family that rules over the area threatens to evict the girl and proceeds to trash the place (it's up to you whether or not you will to intervene). If you'd joined the thug (who happens to belong to said greedy family) in the beginning, you may find yourself being the one to trash the girl's restaurant.
