I need advice on which game to play now, have played all Tomb Raider :Z
and have just finished Sanitarium, which I loved
I would like to play another game like Sanitarium, not so much as 'scary' but puzzles you have to work out, things you have to think about, I do not like doing all the 'racing around' and 'shooting/killing', so any idea's?? I will be looking to eBay to buy it.

Widget - if what you say is true and you are looking for games primarily geared to exploration, puzzel solving and no shooting/killing then I strongly suggest tackling the Myst series. You can get the first three of the games - Myst, Riven, and Myst Exile - in a collection called the 10th Anniversery DVD Edition. (hope your computer has a DVD player) The fourth in the series is Myst Revelation - the latest one on the market.

Other games along this line would be Syberia and Syberia 2 (play Syberia first), Sentinal, Return to Mysterious Island, Riddle of the Sphinx, The Omega Stone, Atlantis Evolution and - well - I could go on and on but you get the idea. I am sure there are others out there who will add to the list their favorites.

What ever game you choose (that is playable on your computer) I hope will bring you satisfaction. Good Gaming :D

You could look at the review part of the site.
It's kind of difficult to answer your question, because pretty much all the adventure games are about puzzles, without shooting/killing and racing around.

Have you played any advenutre game, besides Sanitarium? What kind of settings do you like? How important is the story for you? The graphics? Do you like to see your character, or to play first person?

I just finished Sanitarium too. My problem is that I was so blown away by that fantastic game that anything I play now will be a huge letdown.

I'm thinking of getting a game called Faust, Seven Games of the Soul. From the AG review:

In the game, the player adopts the persona of Marcellus Faust, an elderly black man who has arrived at an abandoned amusement park called Dreamland. We are introduced to a suave, debonair demon named Mephistopheles (or Mephisto), who explains that Faust has been chosen to help settle a dispute with God. The owner of Dreamland has recently died, and now the fates of seven park inhabitants' souls are being determined. It's Faust's duty to mystically move back in time, investigate the troubled lives of a very bizarre cast of characters and unravel the macabre history of the park. In a twist on the now-clichéd amnesia premise, Faust is stripped of his memory in order to remain an objective observer, which suggests that he, too, was once an active participant whose role is yet to be revealed.

It seems to be similar to Sanitarium in its focus on the psychological.

*lets out a hearty laugh* Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha :7

have you tried

1. The Longest Journey
2. Gabriel Knight 1, 2, or 3
3. Syberia 1 and 2?

wehelll if not my friend, do....

also, Faust is a well-designed game but quite disturbing in almost every way possible. It's good......but a lot creepier then Sanitarium....and it's first-person, *shrugs*.

Hmmm...
I've only used walkthroughs as a last resort, and each time I've gotten the answer to a puzzle, I've felt stupid because the necessary clues were there in hindsight, I simply hadn't put them together correctly.
For example (let's see if I can skirt giving an outright spoiler), in "Return To Zork" you are required to obtain a certain substance, and you have the things that produce that substance, but the substance isn't forthcoming. I went all over the game and tried everything, but nothing seemed to work, so I resorted to a walkthrough. As it turns out, the clue was simple and obvious in the way you get the substance-producing things in the first place. I felt stupid and humbled by having to look this up, and resolved to forego walkthroughs from then on.
To me, adventure games are about the journey, not the destination, and I'm always a bit sad when I finish a good one. It's like "Is that all there is? But I was just getting used to this world! I still haven't seen what's in that cave (or hut, or castle, etc.)!". A typically Sagittarian outlook, but then I'm a pretty typical Sagittarian- always wondering what's over the next horizon.

But to each his (or her) own.

There's a walkthrough for every game, for example at UHS (type UHS + the name of your game on google, and you'll find a link). So don't worry about that.

Here are some links to some of the mentioned games' reviews that I did a while ago - Obsidian is my all-time favorite game, with Faust a close second. Blackstone Chronicles is a similar theme as Sanitarium, but more grisly, since it deals with real past history.

Faust (http://mysterymanor.net/reviewFaust.htm)

I get to review all the old games at MM! LOL

Blackstone Chronicles also looks like a winner. I'm trying to track down a cheap copy on eBay. And I've thought off and on about getting Sanitarium, but I've just read of so many problems running it on XP that I'm not sure I want to put up with the pain of getting it to work. Do these games all work in Dosbox? I've yet to try it yet since I've not really wanted to play anything that wasn't covered by ScummVM.

I don't know why, but I'm attracted to asylums and the treatment of mental health patients in the early years. Scary, depressing, and quite upsetting stuff went on back in the day. I'm totally interested in any games that can capture this messed up history.

The rerelease of Sanitarium does work on XP. Blackstone chronicles you might have to use the win98 compatibility mode for both the install and the running of the game. BTW, I got my Sanitarium in Wal-Mart for $8.99. Blackstone Chronicles I got on eBay.
