Did anyone catch this yet?* I played it earlier today. Three words:
OH. MY. GOD.
I can't even begin to describe it. Um, where do I start? Well, from what I know I think it's the start of the story, where you play as Zoe. You're in the streets of Casablanca running around, and you need to get to that skyscraper where your contact is waiting for you (if you know this much, she's the one who got trapped inside that glass chamber by the imposter). There are two puzzles, one in the subway involving a frying pan stuck on the train tracks, and the other one where you have get past the guard in the building's lobby using a tennis racket and a tennis ball. Both puzzles offer at least two solutions. I haven't gone back to discover the alternate solutions yet, but will later this evening.
Graphically it looks incredible! It reminds me of Broken Sword 3, very vibrant, colourful, and rich (although this being a beta demo, some details are still waiting to be worked on, like voiceovers; for now it's all subtitles). The camera movements people were complaining about are actually very nicely done, it allows you to control Zoe without getting in your way. And yes, I used the mouse (no gamepad), and it was very intuitive, MUCH better than the stupid controls for Uru.
Anyway, I CANNOT WAIT for this game. Damn!!! Doesn't come out til around December. :frown:
* Unfortunately it's for press only.

Hey, Trep, you got it too? I got it from MM to demo, and write a preview on. It really looks spectacular, doesn't it? I can't wait to play the whole game! It certainly is easier to get around than URU. How did you get around that receptionist? Did you fight her or talk nice to her and distract her? She was one weird lady! I wish it had some scenes from Arcadia, sigh, but it didn't go that far.

I kicked the bitch's ass!! Unfortunately it was too easy, seemed to be tailored more towards n00bies who at least wanna try a bit of action. But still, it is an adveture game, so no issues with me. It's great to finally be able to play that scene after just having to watch it in movie clips. When I replay the demo later I'll try the other non-violet approaches.
What I REALLY loved about it was that the challenges felt very natural and emergent from the story and gameworld, not at all slapped on like other stupid adventures that just dump them in front of you with a sign saying: I AM A PUZZLE! SOLVE ME!

We didn't need to sign any NDA, only that we not distribute it. Besides, the demo features what's already been shown in the movie clips. This is just a hands-on taste of what to expect.

04-01-2005, 03:36 PM
Well, I had to use a code name and password to download it. They want a pre-preview written about it for our site, so I don't see why we can't discuss it publicly. Zoë looks much better in the game than with the screenshots, where she looks like she's posing.
Trep, being the coward that I am, I distracted her and got by that way. It took me a couple of times before I got that other one free though, where it's a timed scene. I saved first, luckily. The graphics are much better than TLJ, of course you'd expect that. It really is awesome!

The press distribution system they use works similarly to TAC's, where you work with an ftp. So it's almost like it's already there for you.
Yeah, Zoe looks far more gorgeous in motion than static, I agree. I only wish the camera allowed you to freelook so I can check her out from all angles ;) . But I'm not complaining, I still get to see her beauty during the in-game cutscenes and when the camera pans a certain way. Graphics-wise, I'd tend more to not compare it with the 2D TLJ. I mean, it's in real time 3D so I'd have to use a different criteria. That said, it really does have the vibrancy of Broken Sword 3. But we'll see, there are levels in the game that take place at night or in darkened areas.

I just wish the demo had gone on for a while longer - I wanted to see more! I know they don't have too much ready for public viewing, but what they have is outstanding! TLJ must have been a hard act to follow, but by the looks of what we saw today, Ragnar has outdone himself.

Yup, you got us, and so did SquareJawHero! Trep and I cooked this one up - his idea, though. I did get access to Martin Mystère for MM for pre-review, though, so it gave me the idea to use that premise here, where Trep might have access for AG, and me for MM. Happy April Fool's Day!

I'll give it my best shot FGM.*D Though prior to this century my experience was limited to what was available for the MAC. (I should also add for the Commodor and Atari computers) In reading these threads I find myself wishing there was a way to get hold of some of the last century's PC games without having to resort to ebay or its ilk. :frusty: Oh well, just as they came out with re-releases of Atlantis, Beyond Atlantis and Bad Mojo - maybe they'll re-release Obsidian and others like it.
Thanks for the welcome
Fairygdmther
04-02-2005, 02:35 PM
Well, I think I can safely say you won't see Obsidian rereleased. This incredible game (my all-time favorite), not only did not make enough money to break even, but the company went out of business after it. I had a hard time finding it, but eventually did on eBay. Most people that have it don't want to get rid of it.
Sanitarium was rereleased and is available for about $10, and the advantage of this is that the original release had cd's that could explode in your drive. The new release eliminated this problem.
You may want to look in Game Trader Zone (GameTZ) (http://gametz.com/) to see if anyone is offering it.

What I'm really looking forward to is how each character - Zoe, April, and Kiam - will have their own little personal demons or issues to confront, and how they'll deal with each other on an interpersonal level given their individual natures and psychologies. I've been waiting for an adventure this complex in human interaction since GK3. These three PLAYABLE characters look like they'll have to depend on each other in order to save the world, and that their lives are inevitably intertwined in some way.

I want to see April Ryan, and hear her story. She seems jaded now, yet wasn't that way at all in TLJ. Zoë seems really cool, yet young, innocent. Kiam doesn't interest me in the slightest. I want to go back to Stark and Arcadia, and see how they've changed. I would like to see the story continued, and see what evolved in the two worlds. Do they now know of the existence of the other? Wah! I just want to play the game NOW!!!

From what little I've read about him, Kiam seems like he's destined to question his blind faith in some kind of belief he's been lead to follow. He's an assassin, and from my gleanings he probably kills for a cause, and events in story - possibly his encounter with April and/or Zoe - seem to lead to this questioning.

Thrift stores are your best friends. I was a Mac user and didn't get a PC until 2000 or so, and missed out on a lot of games. I've bought a ton, cheap, at Goodwill and other thrift stores. They're usually CDs mixed in with the music CDs, but sometimes I even find stuff in boxes. It's hit or miss, obviously, but I have collected a huge number of PC games in the past few years and very few were purchased on ebay.

WHat is it with people calling him Kiam? His name is Kian, as it says so on the official site (http://www.dreamfall.com/characters/kian/). I've seen this mistake in a number of previews too. How... odd . (Oh, I just read Jaz's post. Go Jaz! ;))
Anyway, I like Kian. He seems like the kind of guy that walks up to someone trying to ask them something in a nice manner for a change (because he normally tends to demand in stead of ask) but soon resorts to intimidation because he has almost no patience and just ain't that nice a person. I would love to see the reactions of the people whom Kian will interrog... nicely ask for some information. :) But he also seems like the kind of guy that gets in touch with his sensitive side once in a while, although he doesn't much like that side and tries to hide it. :P

I thought it was an "n", but wasn't sure, so I followed Trep's lead there, sorry for not checking myself.
As far as the letters with accents added, it is very easy to do:
Use the Alt key, and the number pad numbers to type in - Hold the alt key, key in 137, then release the Alt key, and ë - Voilà !
I searched the net, but couldn't find the list of all these - if anyone wants a copy of my list of them, PM me with your address, and I'll email you the small notepad file. It will print on one page if you want a hardcopy.

I see that, but how do you use it?
By pressing alt plus the numbers it tells you on the numpad, or by selecting it and then it will make the character available to copy and paste.

Interesting - the number given doesn't correspond to the actual numbers I used to get that character with Alt and the number keypad, in any font. I tried about six different ones and they correspond with each other, but not with my list that I just created today.

Don't be angry, Trepsie!
After all, your misspelling of the name made me look up what the dots are called, and made find this useful bit of information (which, apparently, no french teacher ever thought about telling me. I guess they are too much used to those rules, to remember them - they put accents automatically :shifty: ):
* French uses grave, acute, circumflex, cedilla and diaeresis. However, not all diacritics occur on all vowels in French:
o Acute only occurs on e (é)
o Grave occurs on e (è), a (à), and u (ù)
o Circumflex occurs on all vowels: e (ê), a (â), i (î), o (ô), and u (û)
o Diaeresis occurs on e (ë), i (ï), u (ü) and y (ÿ) (ÿ is only used in some proper names like Louÿs or placenames like L'Haÿ-Les-Roses, and ü is used in only one noun, capharnaüm, and many proper names like Saül)
o Diactritics are sometimes omitted from capitalized letters, especially in some countries like France.
So I want to thank you with this post.
Thank you Trepsie!

As I never played Longest Journey I'm looking forward to this one just to see what all the fuss is about. *D
