View Full Version : What do you feel is the current state of the adventure genre?

I'm not meaning to stir up any more controversy. I just think it would be more beneficial to get a consensus here rather than arguing over it all day long. It would also be interesting if some of you would copy this poll to non-adventure forums and report the results back.

...bysmitty

p.s. is there a way to edit a poll after it is created?

Could you add a choice for growing slowly? The last year has shown some increase in numbers of both games and gamers.

Consensus? What are we, a political party? Why should there be a consensus? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the right to stick to it no matter what majority thinks. Who are we to decide if a genre is dead or not anyway? A dead man won't jump out of his grave just because majority claims he's alive nor will he cease to exist if enogh people say he's dead.

But seeing what people from non-adventure forums think, now that would be interesting (of course, if they understand what is meant by "adventure").

A dead man won't cease to exist if enough people say he's dead? :D

Anyway, consensus is not possible, nor needed, but I still would be interested to see how many people here believe that the genre still produces some great games even now.

I agree is there a way I can edit the poll and add a few more options?

Only mods can edit polls.

Could use a "not too shabby" option.

Let's save on editing and list whatever new options are wanted.

Personally, I'd like to see a "Living on borrowed time" option.

Also, I don't think "no good ones" will get enough votes, because it's a little too rigid. "Not enough good ones" would work a whole lot better.

Yeah, that's what I'd vote on. None of the other one's apply to how I feel enough to vote for them.

I think it's quite healthy, for my tastes. I've recently played Aura and Mysterious Journey 2 and thought they were great games. I had fun with Runaway too, even though 3rd person games are not my favourite. There are lots of new games I'm looking forward to - Rhem 2, Myst 5, Scratches, Keepsake, Shady Brook, Barrow Hill, and the latest Nancy Drew. I'm also interested in Martin Mystere, Runaway 2 and Agatha Christie.

I voted for that. But I really wanted to say that there are very few good ones.

Healthy, but a bit boring. Not enough diversity of topics. No really adult themes.

Between 1 and 2 - so I'm not voting.

Yeah but I could say that about every genre I play.

I think that the adventure genre has never been in better shape; what with Sam & Max 2 being released and Monkey Island 5 being confirmed. And, of course, Sierra getting stronger with each passing year. I've no complaints.

Currently I'd say stagnant, because most of the games I've played are mediocre at best. At least, compared to some of the games in the past. But I have high hopes for the games that are currently in development, so I expect to vote 'alive and well' in a few months.

I'd say the current state of the adventure genre is that of a small cherry pie.

Hmmm... there are a lot of so-so games around but few that are really interesting. I mean, many of them revolve around the "save the world/city/town" kinda scenario.

There's nothing wrong with it, actually, but most of them turn into a really dreadfully boring kinda journey. That is, one which involves lengthy but bland dialogues, a less than convincing storyline and puzzles which involve tons of mouse-clicking, bad logic and which fail to reward the player with something interesting apart from more bad plot.

Lack of originality is one of the most scathing affliction.

It's definitely seen better days what with the likes of Jane Jensen and Tim Schafer not involved in the adventure genre anymore. However whether or not the adventure genre becomes more popular or not depends mostly on the success of Dreamfall. I'm hoping that this game will be successful and encourage people who don't usually buy adventure games to buy adventures.

This would be my vote. Of recent offerings, there are very few I'm excited about. I'm excited about upcoming games--but then I was six months ago as well, and had my hopes dashed by how the games turned out. :\ :\ (I might be exaggerating a bit for effect.)

Wait, the ones that didn't turn out to be what I hoped or the ones I still hope will turn out to be what I hope?

 (smiley contraband)

I can't remember what I felt let-down about, but I think it was Darkfall: Lights Out, Sentinel, Atlantis Evolution, and Wanted, all of which seemed to disappoint critics to some degree (at least the ones at AG, if I have that right).

I'm psyched about at least half of the games on the hype-o-meter, though, and it would be more if I weren't a scaredy-cat about violence, which knocks out Still Life and the Indigo Prophecy out of the running. So . . .

Didn't you play Moment of Silence, Ni.Bi.Ru, Myst 4, or Alida? I though they were quite good.
And Sentinel isn't a let down, in my opinion, because it delivers exactly what it promises. The trouble is that it promises a lot of extremely hard puzzles, which obviously is not everyone's cup of tea.

Anyway, you're not going to play Still Life because of the violence? How exactly would you define violence? (for me Still Life is a dark game, but not a violent one)

I could, it would skew the results (i.e. people who already voted may have voted differently if the options were different). I've been yelled at for doing this in the past. ;)

Yeah, that's what I wanted to avoid. I was hoping people would list categories they'd like to see included, and then we could just re-do the poll, which is a lot cleaner than back-editing everything.

I'd like to hear the opinion of people, who grew up with adventure games during their heydays and don't give a damn about those games, that are labeled as adventure games nowadays. The truth is out there, not amongst us.
