View Full Version : Mouse problem

I finally got my old computer all the way to my apartment and I got it to work......almost. You can move the mouse horizontally but not vertically. When I stick it in my new computer it works perfect. Do anybody have any idea of how this is possible? I really would like to play the older games I just got my hands on (I managed to get some movement out of the mouse once so I have started to play Pandora Directive but it was still really tricky). Help?
Weird that it works on one machine and not the other. I was going to suggest taking out the track ball and cleaning out any dust, but if that were the problem it would affect both computers.
Do you have another mouse you can try on the old computer? Does the same problem occur?

Have you tried cleaning it? It has to be cleaned of all the fuzzies and dust at times.
Maybe that helps.

Edit: Ooops. Sorry, I should have paid attention while reading fov's post.
Still, sometimes different computers work different with the same mouse. Even if it is just dust. Try it.

Guess the first thing I did when I found out that it didn't work on the old computer? :P Trust me, the mouse is as clean as it can be. But thanks for trying.
I don't have another mouse here to test with unfourtunately. I'm using an "extension-thing" in order for my new mouse to work with my old computer (it's ps2 to serial, I think). Could that cause this kind of problem?

Probably could. Did this setup work before you moved? If yes, it could be that the cord got damaged or something in the move.

I never used this thing before (I haven't used my old computer for a rather long time), it's not really a cord just something that makes a mouse with a ps2-port to fit in a computer with a serial-port. I don't think there is any chance of it being broken, but I guess it could be poorly fitted but that seems unlikely too.
My understanding, with adapters like that and also extension cords, is that every extra cord you have can degrade the signal between the computer and the device. I have my monitor, mouse, and keyboard hooked up to a KVM switch so I can share them between two machines. I have not had any significant problems, but the video signal to the monitor is somewhat degraded - there's a flickering that I don't get if I plug the monitor directly into one of the machines. So my thought is that the adapter may be causing your problem... either because there's something wrong with the adaper, or because using the adapter mucks up the communication between the computer and the mouse somehow.

I guess I could try getting a new one. It seems really strange how it can make one "pin" in the mouse work while the others don't. But I'm out of ideas so I will try with a new one.
