Great review Bacardi Jim. I never played the game because every time I found it I would have needed a small bank loan to buy it and I remember the reviews were fairly mixed when it came out, but now I'm dying to play it...

I've been trying to find this game for a while, but unfortunately it's one of those games that always shoots up to an unaffordable price (for me, anyway) on Ebay. Thus I can't really comment too much on your review, but if anything it's more incentive to find the game.
I've played the demo, and I really loved it. Given that, I too have found that the prices that pop up on E-Bay are generally unaffordable for me. So, I am still looking. :(
Glad to see you have nice things to say about it. I was sort of skeptical at first because it got a 4.9 on Gamespot, on whom I usually rely for my reviews in general. But this is where I come for my adventure reviews, and given this, I'd say The Neverhood is worthit :D
Great review!
This is for sure one the most unique and special games. Graphics and animations are downright beautiful and puzzles interesting.
Clay world really sets up one of the most magic gaming experiences

The price on ebay has come down a lot: 25-30 dollars. I paid twice that much for it in 2001.

On the other hand, I would assume there are generally fewer boxed copies to be found

True. But my 50 bucks didn't buy me a boxed copy either.

Ouch... A good strategy for me is to only buy boxed copies on Ebay. They're generally rare enough that it sort of limits my spending by default. ;)

The Neverhood will be featured again on AG soon. Stay tuned...

I know you're not going to believe me, but I originally read Marek's post as "The Neverhood will be featured on AG soon. Stay tuned..." (ie, without the "again") and thought either he or I was going crazy. Hence my reply.

I agree with the review. Although the 1st person view graphics didn't really bother me, mostly because my computer is used to those things :)

I liked the review and the Neverhood is in my top 10. High time I replayed it. Just listening to the radio in the Neverhood was so much fun.
But....
"Even without a walkthrough, most players will likely be able to complete the game in less than 20 hours, and experienced gamers can finish it in 10-15 hours."
Seriously? Without a walkthrough? It took me far more than 20 hours. I thought some of those puzzles were very hard. Are there really people who can do it in 10 hours and still enjoy the game? I confess I don't know how long it will take most players, but I do know that most reviewers of most games are not talking about ME when they say things like that. Am I an underperformer or an average player? Is it wise to estimate the number of hours?
BTW, the text of the wall can be read/downloaded at several sites. Easier on the eyes.

Great Review! But what about the music? It'll keep you playing it around in your head until you join a mental hospital.
And I payed recently $58 for a sealed box version.

Hmmm... Okay, I believe you :P
Now the question is: how is it going to be featured?

So..... I've actually managed to earn myself a bit of credibility at last, eh? ;)

Yes, but now you just lost it again after making it look like you wrote this positive review just to gain credibility! :P
So... you better start working on your next review! ;)

My next one will be for Ring. I don't have any idea when it will appear. Unless things change, I'll also be doing Cypher and Forever Worlds.
Plus one surprise, hopefully soon.

The music in Neverhood is some of the best game-music I have heard. I would love to have it on cd, but I haven't found it.

I chose not to discuss the music because it is so dependent on individual tastes. I mean, in a world where people actually like such performers as Celine Dion and 'N Synch, it can be dangerous for a game critic to espouse views about the quality of music in a game. I have to agree, though, that I found the music interesting and unique. The way the radio songs were able to sound like singing without actually having any recognizable words was fascinating. I particularly enjoyed the "blues" song, which was kinda reminiscent of Howlin' Wolf.
The soundtrack occasionally pops up on eBay, or you can order a 2-CD set of Terry Taylor's game music (Titled "Imaginarium") at www.DanielAmos.com (http://www.DanielAmos.com)
Unfortunately, the set is out-of-stock at the current time.

By the way, the main character's name is actually Klaymen not Klayman like the review states.
Great review, though. Makes me wanna play this gem again.

I would hope the people who visit AG would have better musical tastes than those two aforementioned "artists". Right? RIGHT?

Oh, I always thought it was Klayman. I think more reviews have been wrong.
I wonder why his name is Klaymen, though. Does he have multiple personalities?

I don't know, but I distinctly remember reading it at the beginning of all of the hint letters you could get under your home, at the beginning of the game. Dear Klaymen, or something like that. Maybe Willie(the dude giving the hints) just couldn't spell. :P

Nice review BacardiJim. I enjoyed playing through Neverhood very much. I decided to keep my copy because I know I'll want to replay it sometime.

Althought Willy can't spell and his letters should not be taken as evidence, it is Klaymen according to Doug Tennapel's site.

When you get to the very end of the game, you understand why he is called Klaymen. At least, one of the endings shows why.

I really need to replay this game. There were multiple endings? Depending on the number of video plates you recover, I guess?
Becky

There were only two endings -- the good ending and the bad ending, depending on a choice Klaymen makes: to either take the crown for himself or give it to Hoborg.

Hey you all should go to Amazon.com and buy TenNapel's new graphic novel, Creature Tech.
Do it for Doug. I've gotta plug that guy. He makes me smile like a Jesuit on a religious Jesuit holiday.
