View Full Version : Gk3
I recently received my copy of GK3 in the mail and loaded it, but am having a few problems.
First, the technical one. My system seems to have all the qualifications for the program, and it plays the intro flawlessly. As soon as the game changes to "play mode" it freezes. The blood red cursor appears, then freezes in spot before any picture appears.
At first, I thought it would be because the computer I was using (my old one with win98) wouldn't have the graphic card necessary, but with some investigation I found that, apparantly, it IS 4mb, which is the requirement for the game. I have tried reloading the game, but the same problem persists.
Next problem: The game came in a DVD case (new) with the manual (and comic) included as PDF files. While that's all nice with the pretty comic pictures and all, it's a pain to read it in adobe, not to mention to mention the slight problem of the lack of words in the speech bubbles.
I'm just hoping that someone could give me a brief summary the comic, so I can have some clue as to HOW and WHY gabriel is where he is.

What's your Acrobat version? The latest one is 6. Have you tried it with different versions of Acrobat?
Don't know about the game, except that your card sounds a little too old, perhaps. However, the game has software only mode and you should be able to run the game that way (as far as I remember, it can be accessed from the Start Menu). The performance is going to be a pain, though.
The short version - Gabe and Grace were hired by Prince James to look into the mysterious "night visitors" coming to his house... and while they're there his baby gets kidnapped. Gabe chases the kidnappers onto a train, where one of them knocks him out.
What kind of video card do you have?

If the game keeps freezing up and the normal routine of having your graphic card drivers updated etc doen't work, then your best bet is to play the game in the software mode as deadworm suggested.
I don't think you will have performance issues from playing the game in the software mode. It's just not going to look as nice as you are not going to get the harware based 3D features. If you have a decent CPU, RAM etc., playing GK3 in software mode isn't bad. I tried it on a PC at work that has Intel Extreme onboard graphic controller and a P3 800 MHZ CPU and didn't have any problems.

I once started it in software mode with my old Pentium 450MHz, Voodoo 3 (16MB) card, and it was SLOW. But, as you said, if the processor is fast, no problem.

If you manage to run it in software mode, let me give you one advice:
Don't EVER look at the fountain!
Thanks everyone.
Just to let you know, fov, the video card I've got is some "trio 3d" (most likely came with the PC). It's SUPPOSED to be 4mb, but I'm not terribly sure; I'm not exactly a whiz with computers (they frustrate me a lot).
I'm going to try to run it in software only mode, (that is if I can find it) I'm hoping I can figure out how to get to it.. (??)
Thanks a bunch again
Software mode is one of the game options. If your video card can only handle software mode I think it goes into this by default.
Sorry I can't be more specific, I don't have GK3 installed at the moment. I originally played on a really crappy machine in software mode, though, so it can be done!

Just posting again to let you guys all know you're awesome! :P
GK3 works fine in software only mode, although I'd have never found it on my own. It seems to working great, the camera will take some getting used to (for some reason the zoom seems intuitively backwards to me) and some of the background/textures seem a little off (all the walls in the hotel are completely black, except for the door # and handle). But whatever, I'm just excited that it's gonna work, although I'm forcing myself to finish GK2 first (chapt. 4 and loving it).
I guess there wasn't much point to this post...
But thanks again!

If I was you, I'd seriously consider upgrading my PC. :shifty: S3 Trio 3D is so not good that no wonder GK3 dislikes it. Of other 33 cards the GK3 reaqdme says
S3 VIRGE
Gabriel Knight 3 supports the Virge in software mode only.
S3 TRIO V2
Gabriel Knight 3 supports the Trio V2 in software mode only.
S3 TRIO 64V2-DX/GX
Gabriel Knight 3 will not run on this card.So... :D
Well, not all of us have the luxury of upgrading. When I played GK3 it was on a truly crappy laptop that I stole from the back room of my old office (okay, I told the CEO I was taking it, but he didn't have any clout!) I played that thing into the ground. I didn't have the money at the time for a new computer. When I finally did play GK3 on a real graphics card, though, there was no comparison.
The walls and hotel room doors shouldn't be black. Weird. Hopefully other textures will be okay for you. For the camera, did you notice there is an option to change camera angles? This helped me a lot (I have a hard time with first person perspective...)
But finish GK2 before you go onto GK3! GK2 is one of my most very favorite gams, and once you slog through chapter 4 the rest of the game is absolutely incredible. Every time I replay (which is often) I tend to finish the game, then go back immediately and replay chs5 and 6 again, because I like them so much. :D
