:\ Does anyone have a problem with the pc game of "Tex Murphy - Overseer?" The game always crashes at the point of: "Bosworth Clark's Lab." The game then displays a warning notice saying that my license registration game number and IP address will be able to be viewed by anyone if the game continues. How do you bypass this problem, which has to be very rare, since I've never ran across this before in any pc game.
Hi Plinko, just saw your PM...
I haven't finished this game so I never reached this point. There are some crashes that happen on XP but I'm not sure if this is one of them. The thing about the IP address is really weird though.
Out of curiosity, have you installed Service Pack 2? I know it changes the settings for some ports. That's the only reason I could think that you're getting a message about your IP address being visible to others. Overseer came out long before broadband... there was no assumption, at that time, that the player would have an IP address while playing this game... so I don't think the message is generated by Overseer, but maybe by the operating system.
Also in your PM you mentioned having just installed a new video card and having to hold down your start button for a minute to start the computer? That sounds weird to me, too. Post that information here... others with Radeon cards may have advice for you.

-emilyYes, I have installed "Service Pack 2." And I did notice that when you press "F8" the screen is now divided in half with Service Pack 2 on the right of the screen. What are you suppose to do with that?
And why don't you finish the game of Overseer? up to the point of the problem I am having to see if you also get it. Do you have Windows XP?
Thanks for your help.

What kind of video card do you have? Maybe it's just the one I am using that is causing my problem

Eh, I got bored with it. :P
I'm going to edit the title of the thread to indicate that this may be SP2-related. I didn't install SP2 because I was afraid of stuff like this. I had heard it would muck up some games and would mess with the ports and firewall protection I have enabled. Could be that the crash and the error message have nothing to do with each other - or that the error message is in response to the crash, but the crash would happen whether or not you installed SP2 - I just don't know.

-emily The error message is coming from the game itself...And if I uninstall "Service Pack 2," what would I be allowing in that the Service Pack is keeping out of my computer? Do you know?
I wouldn't try uninstalling SP2, if I were you. Not yet anyway. Could cause even more problems. Hopefully Microsoft will patch it. My understanding is that it's causing problems with a number of games.
Can you post a screenshot of the error message, or if not, write down the exact text and post it here?
It's just a hunch of mine that the problem is related to SP2, because SP2 messes with ports and other computers' ability to see yours on a network. The fact that the error message talks about your IP address being visible to other users makes me think it is related to this, and if you recently installed SP2 this would be a reason that you're only now having the problem. Overseer doesn't have an online component so I don't know why SP2 would affect it... as I said, it's just a hunch. I could be wrong.
This article (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/games/expert/durham_gamesp2.mspx) gives an explanation of how SP2 affects some games and what you can do about it. Maybe it will help?

Try switching between hardware and software renderer. As well as changing resolution.

-emilyThe error report is from Microsoft, which is being sent to them along with my IP address and the games lincense registration number. I was reading what they were reporting in this report and it is too technical for anybody to figure out except their own tech staff.

Just how do you switch from hardware to software renderer? if you will pardon my ignorance in this matter.

Plinko, looks like you're a Tex Murphy fan. ;)
I posted this reply in another thread. So, thought I'd post it here too since it's Tex Murphy related:
The very best place to go for any questions regarding Tex Murphy games is:

In options/settings. It changes how you render the graphics.

I tried the software renderer and I still can not get past the same point in the game without it crashing and windows wanting to send an error report...I must have sent them already ten reports, and I have yet to hear from them, or have them fix the problem. What the hell are they doing with these error reports anyway?

Probably just gathering statistics.
As suggested before you really should try without SP2.

Do you have SP2? And if you do, do you think it is safe to do without it?

Me Im one of those who thinks it's safe to do without XP. ;)
Ran Overseer under W2k and only had one serious crash that was solved by playing with software renderer and other graphics options.
If you don't have some kind of firewall (Im not counting the one that comes with SP0/1) it's not safe to do without SP2 if you run XP though.
