I'm talking about the text adventure game. I used to be a pretty high level on an old BBS, and I just now found the game again. All I remember is to kneel at the willow tree. After that, I'm lost. If anyone can help me out, that would be great! Thanks!

I've never heard of a text adventure named Kyrandia. Is this by Westwood?

You don't kneel at the willow tree in the graphic adventure. I'm confused.

I'm confused too. There are two versions of Kyrandia 1? Text and graphical? :o

After a length search of Baf's IF Guide and google, I'm rather convinced that Toad501 simply doesn't exist, and that that would explain why he's talking about a game that does not exist. :shifty:

If you telnet to Seabreeze BBS (seabreeze.servegame.com) you can find it listed in the games. I guess this means no one knows anything that would be helpful. Hm...

I'm afraid not... I think we're talking about two different games here, one being a rather well-known graphic adventure made by Westwood, published by Virgin Interactive and another one being a text adventure with the same name...

If it helps at all, the authors are Richard Skurnick and Scott James Brinker, with help from Galacticomm.

1991 -- Released The Major BBS v5.3 with Novell NetWare LAN
support. Acquired Galactic Innovations, a third-party
development firm led by Scott Brinker. Now offered The Major
Database, Dial-Out, Kyrandia and more.
Now I just have to find out what The Major BBS is, and why somebody's still using BBSs :P.

Not much out there (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22galactic+innovations%22&btnG=Google+Search) on Galatic Innovations.
Galacticomm was incorporated on July 23, 1985 to initially run a network of
multi-user game systems. In 1986, Galacticomm developed the Model-16 (16 modem
modules on one expansion card) and Galacticomm Software Breakthrough Library
(GSBL, engineer-oriented toolkit for multi-user applications). In 1986,
Galacticomm also wrote Version 1.0 of The Major BBS as an in-house demo of the
Model-16 and released Version 2.0 as shareware. The first commercial sale of
The Major BBS occurred in 1987 with the introduction of Version 4.0 ($59) and
third-party developers also began writing add-on utilities and games.
Version 5.0 of The Major BBS was released in 1988. The GalactiBox (a 16-slot
COM 1-4 expansion chassis) was developed the same year. In 1989, Version 5.07
unveiled new "extended editions" such as the Entertainment, File Library,
MenuMan, and Shopping Mall. Direct-connect for X.25 packet-switch networks
(256 simultaneous users) was also developed in 1989. Version 5.2 offered
BBSETUP for automatic hardware detection and configuration, and optional
protected mode support in 1990. Also manufactured at this time was the
GalactiBoard, an 8-port serial card with 16550 UARTs.
Galactic Innovations, a third-party development firm led by Scott Brinker
(currently Galacticomm president), was acquired by Galacticomm in 1991. The
Major Database, Dial-Out, Kyrandia, and other utilities and multi-user games
were directly offered by Galacticomm as a result of the acquisition. In 1991,
Galacticomm released Version 5.3 which offered Novell NetWare LAN support.
The Major BBS Version 6.0 ($259) implemented a major architectural shift in
1992 with native protected mode operation and source code-free integration of
add-ons. This allowed system operators to easily add products from Galacticomm
and third-party developers without requiring recompilation of the base system.
In 1993, Galacticomm launched Version 6.1 which offered online graphics
capability and enhanced support for Microsoft Windows. Currently shipping
Version 6.2 with integrated RIPscrip, QWK-mail, rewritten file library and
polling services. Today, Galacticomm is one of the largest BBS software
providers in the world.
The Galacticomm mission statement is "To do really cool things in the field of
computer communications and make a buck at it."

You're a detective.
I think it would just be easier if Toad sent everyone interested a copy of it in the E-mail... I'm curious about stolen ideas. At least I think I am. Maybe I should be doing something more with my life.

I used to run a Galacticomm-based BBS... and yes, I remember Kyrandia. But that was so long ago I remember nothing about it!
Ever play TeleMage, by any chance? I actually wrote that one :)

These games sound too similar in concept (even though the plots are obviously different), to be the work of stolen ideas. I contrive that this may be some sort of text adventure prequel.
TELL ME WHERE TO DOWNLOAD IT. Or maybe someone could nicely offer to send it to me. Sounds interesting. I'm interested. That is because it is interesting.

As far as I know, the Kyrandia text adventure was released only as a module for Galacticomm's WorldGroup (aka MajorBBS) Bulletin Board software (back before the internet was common-place, and people actually dialed directly in to online services!). If I'm not mistaken, it was included as part of the basic system - so if you can find an old copy of WorldGroup, it should be included (not sure it's worth all of that trouble). The text adventure was a multi-player game - similar to a mud (except part of the larger BBS system).
The easiest way to play it would be to try to find an old BBS still running w/ Telnet access that has it. There's GOT to be one somewhere :)
For some reason I feel quite certain that the graphic adventure was, in fact, based on the text adventure. But I don't know why I'm thinking that...

I think I found one, but I have to wait for my registration information to clear before I can play it. I also hope I don't have to pay for any of this...
But I mean, the games are too similar now that I've seen that walkthrough. Most striking the two similarities are the birthstone puzzles and the BIG mention of the Kyragem. The Kyragem links them together. How could two games with the same names both have two rather obscure objects based on the game's name?
Anyways, neither of the guys that wrote Kyrandia, the graphic adventure, match up with the guys that wrote Kyrandia, the text adventure.
Also I don't understand who you play as... is it Brandon?
This is odd. I want answers from the developers of the Graphic Adventure. Adventuregamers should send their favorite reporter to the house of the guy that works at Westwood.

It's possible that the rights could have been purchased for a sum. Who knows?
Anyway, I definitely remember this multiplayer text-adventure from my BBSing days in the mid to late '80s. Pretty fun for us to romp around in, turning ourselves into dragons, zapping each other and such things. It was also known as "Quest for Magic" on some servers.
In fact, I found this thread and your forum because I went looking for it, along with Galactic Empire (another great BBS game), in a fit of nostalgia last night.
I think I may have just managed to acquire the C source code for the game.

Hmm, I wonder how hard it would be then to extricate it from WorldGroup. (Of course, I don't know what sort of interface one would use in its place.)
Anyway, I remember this too. In fact, I also came here by searching for Kyrandia, out of curiosity. I had always wondered about the relationship of Kyrandia and LOK. By what I read in here, it sounds to me like LOK was at least inspired by Kyrandia.

Oh, BTW. I recall two other games that I played on a WorldGroup BBS. One was named Fazuul; the plot was this: you and a bunch of others get trapped on this planet (in a parallel universe??) and have to figure out puzzles involving assembling strangely-named objects and interacting with alien machines in order to escape. (No one ever seemed to get very far, though.) Anyone remember this one?
The other one had a similarly odd name which I've long forgotten, probably because it was taken off the BBS about the time that Fazuul was added, but I seem to remember that the whole thing was in much the same style as Fazuul. Anyone have a clue about this?

I recall Kyrandia... I think they may have worked on a sequel. I don't know if they ever released it. When Kyrandia was first released, the company was called Moonshae Telecomm.
There were other classic MajorBBS games too - Quest of the Alchemists, Alchemy 2, Quest for Magic, Fazuul, Zorgon, and I think one other older one that never left Galacticomm's place..
Does anyone have copies of any of these???

Oh hey. No one seems to have mentioned MajorMUD, a richly detailed combat-oriented MUD which was, and still seems to be, one of most popular games (if not THE most popular) on MajorBBS/WorldGroup.

Hey all. I just wanted to let you know that I run a system called High Society BBS that has MajorMUD, Kyrandia, Quest for Magic, and a bunch more of the old games. We've been recently porting some of the older games from MajorBBS and WG DOS to WG NT.
Anyway, the BBS is free and you can play immediately. <link removed>
