Hey, everyone
I recently snatched up a copy of Tex Murphy - Overseer offa ebay. I'm wondering whether or not it's necessary (or recommended) to play the other two games (Pandora Directive/Under a Killing Moon) to understand what's going on or to otherwise know the backstory behind the characters. Additionally, anyone know of any striking technical issues I should watch out for when I try to install/run this game on an XP Pro Machine? Thanks much and please respond soon.

Overseer is the fifth and last game in the Tex series, but it's a remake of the first one (Mean Streets). So you needn't worry too much about not understanding or missing stuff.

From what i've heard it's not 1:1 remake of the game, so i guess... nothing wrong in playing both... i've played Mean Streets, and one day i will most definitely play Overseer.
Timbo, here is complete list of Tex Murphy games (in chronological order)
Mean Streets
Martian Memorandum
Under a Killing Moon
Pandora Directive
Overseer
I started Overseer not having played the other games, and got up to speed pretty quick. All you need to know is that Tex is a private detective and Chelsee is his girlfriend.
As for technical issues - don't even bother with the DVD version (unless you want to torture yourself). It's just too hard to get working, and when I tried uninstalling the DVD version and installing the CD version instead I ran into problems with my computer still thinking I was trying to run the DVD version.
I think you'll also need to put the installer in compatibility mode.

I'm wondering whether or not it's necessary (or recommended) to play the other two games (Pandora Directive/Under a Killing Moon) to understand what's going on or to otherwise know the backstory behind the characters. Each one has it's own seperate story. Although, Tex and Chelsee have an ongoing "romance" since Under A Killing Moon.
Actually, Overseer is in flashback. Tex is telling Chelsee the story of how he met Sylvia Linsky in his first case: Mean Streets.
Additionally, anyone know of any striking technical issues I should watch out for when I try to install/run this game on an XP Pro Machine? Thanks much and please respond soon. Nothing too striking. Give it a try. ;) You won't be disappointed.
