How can you play old adventure games on a windows XP PC? I know SCUMM VM plays lucasarts games. How about sierra ones?

ScummVm for Sierra games? Needlessly cryptic, I'd say 8-)

For old games to run on XP, you definitely need to meet these three friends:

1) VDMSound
2) VMWare or Microsoft Virtual PC
3) DosBox

I'd say for old sierra adventures, DosBox is the one to choose. Newer games, try with VDMSound or a virtual machine, even though almost all newer sierra games ran smoothly on my WindowsXP, either dos or windows versions.

I don't think SCUMMVM does anything for Sierra games. Some can be played with VDMSound or DOSBOX or plain old compatibility mode. Others can't be played without a lot of tweaking, if at all.

Which games are you trying to run? Give specifics (what you're trying to run, what you've already tried, what happened when you tried) and we can hopefully help.

I am going to move this thread over to the hints forum because that's where the techies hang out.

No it doesn't.
VDMSound is fine for me, usually, but DosBox might help.

Thanks a lot for all your help. I tried the larry series yesterday with DOS box and they all worked fine. I just couldn't get Full Throttle to work correctly. The sound was all messed up. It was like the chipmunks version of Ben:) I will try virtual PC today with a DOS os to see if that will work

Did you try Full Throttle with SCUMMVM?

(I've never played it so I'm talking out of my arse here, but Full Throttle is a LucasArts game, not Sierra, so maybe it'll work?)

I can't remember whether they finished the extra subsystem that was needed to make the middle "riding" portion of the game work or not, but apart from that I'm certain scummvm can be used for it.

Full Throttle works start to finish in ScummVM now. The destruction derby is just as frustrating as ever.

That's the problem: you actually installed the game, you shouldn't.

Instead copy the game to hard disk (I don't mean the whole cd, just in case you're not sure) and tell ScummVm the dir where you copied it too.
There, it's done!

Anyway Microsoft virtual pc can be downloaded (30 days limited version) from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/
VmWare can be downloaded (limited version) from http://www.vmware.com

I hope it can help in someway :)
